Warriors hold on for district title

Jubilation

SHELBY — Four inches. That is approximately how far Lucas first baseman Liz Yirga’s game ending flyout came from tying the Division IV district final between the Mohawk and Lucas softball teams on Friday at Shelby. With the Warriors leading by four runs, starting pitcher Hannah Jordan retired the first two batters, but Erica Westfield hit an infield single and Frankie Depue reached on an error at third to bring up Morgan Spitler, who belted a two-run triple to deep left center.

FINDLAY — If Carey could have kept it a close game going into the bottom of the seventh, it might have a chance for yet another dramatic comeback. But the Blue Devils’ mistakes finally caught up to them in a seven-run seventh inning as North Baltimore gave itself plenty of cushion to knock off the top-seeded and state No. 2 team, 10-3, in a Division IV district final Friday at the Findlay Marathon Diamonds.

SHELBY — The ability to execute small ball and clutch hitting have been two elements of the Wynford baseball team’s success the last two weeks. During Thursday’s Division III district semifinal versus Galion, the Royals successfully executed in both areas as the No. 10 seeded Royals upset the No. 1 seed Galion, 6-5, at Shelby.

GALION — When Mohawk put a run on the board in the fourth inning, it seemed like it could be just what it needed to lead to a victory Wednesday in a Division IV district semifinal game at Galion’s Heise Park. But South Central used an infield hit and a walk to spark a three-run bottom of the fourth on its way to a 6-1 victory.
