COLUMBUS — Upper Sandusky senior Connor Johnston set out to place in the 81st annual state wrestling tournament. Although he likely would have preferred a higher place, he will leave the Jerome Schottenstein Center on Saturday having accomplished that goal as an All-Ohioan.

COLUMBUS — Every time Carey’s Tanner May looked for an opening against Smithville’s Riley Smucker, he simply couldn’t find one. In a low-scoring Division III 170-pound championship semifinal match, Smucker used an escape and a takedown to defeat May 3-1 on Friday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center.

COLUMBUS — It’s been quite a wrestling career for Mohawk High School senior Daniel Price, but it has come to a close. A day after winning his first and only match of the day in the Division III championship preliminaries of the state tournament, Price lost a 17-1 technical fall to state placer Jacob Edwards of Troy Christian in the Division III 132-pound championship quarterfinals.

COLUMBUS — Mohawk senior Daniel Price is one step closer to his goal of getting to the podium in his final trip to the state wrestling tournament. Price jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in his first-round 132-pound match and despite a mini rally by his opponent, Coshocton’s Blake Barrick, Price held on for a 6-3 decision in the Division III preliminaries Thursday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center.

COLUMBUS — After talking with his father the night of the district wrestling tournament in Norwalk, Upper Sandusky senior Connor Johnston changed his goals heading into his first appearance at the state tournament. He was able to adjust his goal after meeting the first one with a consolation round pin Thursday night.

COLUMBUS — Three state wrestling individual tournament appearances, three opening round victories. Upper Sandusky senior Noah Clary (182) always has won his first match at Ohio high school wrestling's biggest stage, and on Thursday at the 81st annual state tournament, that trend continued.

COLUMBUS — It is often said that pins are rare at the state wrestling tournament. Carey’s Tanner May (170), however, bucked that trend by pinning Lorain Clearview’s Julian Colbert at the 5:00 mark of the Division III championship preliminaries to advance to the championship quarterfinals Friday.

The top two seeds are into the semifinals, along with a couple of lower-seeded individuals, as the Wyandot Match Game Invitational bowling tournament opened this weekend at Wyandot Lanes. Top-seeded brothers Allen and Don McLaughlin both went 2-0 on the opening weekend, as did No. 11 seed Al Garvin and No. 13 seed Eric Miller in the double-elimination tournament.
