Mohawk, Carey off to good starts in Division III sectional

CAREY — Mohawk has nine, Carey seven and Riverdale two wrestlers in the semifinals of the Division III sectional tournament that began Friday at Carey. The tournament wrestled only championship bracket matches through to the semifinals. Those who have reached that round are assured of placing in the top six and need only one more win to lock up a spot in next weekend’s district tournament.

BUCYRUS — Alex Crall picked up three fouls in less than 12 minutes and Bucyrus was within five points of its cross-town rival late in the second quarter. It just couldn’t keep its early pace. Wynford pulled far ahead in the middle quarters of a 74-51 win Friday. The 23-point victory snapped a three-game skid just in time for the tournament.

Upper finishes season strong at districts

BOWLING GREEN — Friday evening’s final race in the Division II district meet at Bowling Green State University’s Cooper Pool was a fitting finish to the Upper Sandusky swim team’s season. The Rams’ boys 400 free relay team of Ryan Outland, Jeran Ward, Jacob Glass and Konner Holloway shaved five and a half seconds off its seed time to finish 12th in 3:39.91 during a day in which the team set multiple personal records — as it did all year long.

Falcons upset Panthers in finale

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Riverdale had a strong second half to finish its regular season with a 55-46 upset of McComb on Friday night. The Panthers (11-9, 5-6 Blanchard Valley Conference) led 9-8 after one quarter and 27-20 at halftime, but the Falcons (5-17, 2-9 BVC) cut the deficit to 34-33 entering the final quarter and then outscored McComb 22-12.

Riverdale’s Holderman named to All-BVC 1st team

Riverdale’s Sydney Holderman was selected to the first team, and teammate Janessa Taylor was a second-team pick on the All-Blanchard Valley Conference girls basketball team released Wednesday. The Falcons’ Taylor Frey and Taylor Farmer were selected for honorable mention.
