Upper Sandusky’s Dyer earns spot on state podium

COLUMBUS — Thurston Dyer will be on the podium when Division II state placers are recognized at 138 pounds. Dyer, a four-time league champion and three-time state qualifier for Upper Sandusky, finally earned two wins at the state wrestling tournament to secure a spot among Ohio’s top eight.

Mohawk’s Draper to wrestle for state title

COLUMBUS — Cole Draper’s nose was bleeding and he couldn’t see out of his right eye. In spite of unique circumstances, the Mohawk junior defended his way into the Division III 170-pound title match Friday with a 6-4 sudden victory decision over Wayneville’s Kyle Ice in the championship semifinal.

Price’s tournament ends

COLUMBUS — Daniel Price was overmatched in his consolation bout Friday afternoon. Price wrestled Bishop Ready’s Caleb Brooks, the Heath district champion in Division III, after Brooks was upset in his quarterfinal match earlier in the day.

Gold medal

Mike and John Vogel earned gold medals with a score of 831 in the doubles competition Thursday in the Special Olympics National Unified Bowling Tournament in Reno, Nevada.

Wrestling event to raise money for USMS trip

Upper Sandusky Middle School will host an area wrestling tournament with proceeds going toward the eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C. Wrestlers up to age 14 are eligible to compete in the inaugural Cory Washburn Memorial Tournament at 10 a.m. March 13.

Rams’ Dyer, Clary both get wins

COLUMBUS — Thurston Dyer finally won his preliminary-round match and Noah Clary won his state tournament debut to advance straight to Friday’s championship quarterfinals. It was Clary who looked like he had wrestled in the state tournament before.

Wentling gets top honor

Sydney Wentling

Carey’s Sydney Wentling was a first-team All-Northwest District selection in Division IV to lead all area players on the teams released Thursday evening. Wentling’s teammate Shelby Kin was selected to the second team in Division IV, and Riverdale’s Syndey Holderman was a second-team honoree in Division III.
