Riverdale advances relays, 2 individuals, Carey 1 to state meet

FOSTORIA — Both of Riverdale’s 3200 relays qualified for state, along with the Falcons’ Grant Inbody in the discus and Olivia Combs in the high jump, and Carey’s Abbie Bushong in the shot put on the first day of the Division III regional meet Wednesday at Fostoria Memorial Stadium.

The Falcons girls won their race, with Eden Barnes, Chloe Powell, Allison Woodruff and Marissa Bonham finishing in a new school-record time of 9:41.33. That easily beat the previous mark of 9:44.86 set in 1991 and won the race by more than seven seconds.

Riverdale’s boys qualified in the event for a second straight season, finishing fourth. Andrew Woodruff, Nick Tackett, Kason Barnes and Luke Donaldson finished the race in 8:22.37.

Inbody was third in the boys discus with a throw of 147-11, while Olivia Combs cleared 4-11 in the high jump to take fourth place. Carey’s Abbie Bushong is headed to state in the girls shot put with a fourth-place throw of 35-7.75.

The top four finishers in each event advance to state. Finals were held in half of the field events, plus the 3200 relay. Preliminaries were held for track sprint events, with the top eight qualifying for the finals Friday.

In other girls finals results, the Falcons’ Katie Boucher scored a point in the shot put by placing eighth with a throw of 33-10.75. Shae Berger missed joining her teammate on the podium in the high jump, finishing 10th at 4-9. Mohawk’s girls 3200 relay team of Emerson Gurney, Claire Johnson, Lily Lawhorn and Cara Peterson finished in 15th place in 10:56.58.

The Warriors missed advancing to state in the boys 3200 relay by two places. Brayden Cleveland, Garrett Rinehart, Jett Loesser and Kolten Helton were sixth in 8:26.19, less than four seconds behind the fourth-place Falcons.

Riverdale’s girls had a pretty good day in preliminary events too. Marissa Bonham had the second-best qualifying time in the 400 dash, finishing in 59.09 seconds. Kendel Rall made the finals of both hurdles events, qualifying fifth in the 300 in 48.16 and sixth in the 100 in 16.68. Ella Roach is in the 100 dash finals after posting the sixth-best preliminary time of 12.80.

Rall, Barnes, Woodruff and Bonham are in the finals of the 1600 relay after qualifying third in 4:06.73.

Roach just missed the finals in the 200 dash with a ninth-place time of 26.78. Riverdale also just missed the 800 relay finals in ninth place, with Roach, Barnes, Rall and Bonham finishing in 1:49.18. The 400 relay team of Kennedy Phelps, Lilly Hilvers, Roach and Emily O’Flaherty was 12th in 52.96.

Carey’s Brody Baker led the way in preliminary events on the boys side, reaching the finals in both hurdles events. He qualified third in the 300 in 41.01 and sixth in the 110 in 15.62. Baker also teammed up with Brayden Young, Austin Niederkohr and Bryce Puckett to advance in the 1600 relay, with the team finishing eighth in 3:34.51.

Niederkohr, Puckett, Baker and Tripp Phoenix missed out the 800 relay finals by two spots, finishing 10th in 1:34.46. Mohawk’s John Stansberry, Gavin Barth, Braxton Jenkins and Mason Schimpf were 12th in the same event in 1:35.77.

Mohawk had two other relays come up short of qualifying for the finals. Barth, Schimpf, Loesser and Rinehart were 14th in the 1600 relay in 3:53.69. Stansberry, Jenkins, Barth and Schimpf came in 14th in the 400 relay in 46.52.

Good run

Phoenix did not reach the finals in the 100 dash, running 11th in 11.39. He qualified but did not compete in the 200 dash.

Jenkins was 16th in the 300 hurdles preliminary race in 44.32. Rinehart did not compete in the 400 dash finals.

The Division III district meet concludes with field events at 4 p.m. and running event finals at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Fostoria Memorial Stadium.
