CAREY — Carey High School senior Talen Nye wasn’t planning to participate in an extracurricular activity this year. But after receiving a schoolwide email from Carey Technology Coordinator Nick Rider asking if any students were interested in the new Carey esports team, many students, including Nye, immediately expressed interest and became members of the club.

Don McLaughlin is one win away from his fourth Wyandot Match Game bowling championship in the last five years as he became the last undefeated bowler of this year’s tournament Wednesday at Wyandot Lanes. McLaughlin moved into the finals of the Match Game by defeating Roger Ball dominantly, 783-572.

The Wyandot County Church Dartball League recently announced its year-end award winners. St. Paul Lutheran Church 2 was the regular season champion, with Trinity United Church of Christ of McCutchcenville finishing as the runner-up.

The Wyandot Indians took home many gold medals at the Special Olympics National Unified Bowling Tournament in Las Vegas.

BUCYRUS — Wynford High School senior forward Olivia Grove recently received special-mention All-Ohio honors in Division IV on Tuesday. Grove, the lone senior on the team, averaged 11.4 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.2 steals, 1.6 blocks and 1.2 assists per game this season.

Mohawk’s Zach Hayman and Paul Dunn took top honors as player and coach of the year, respectively, on the All-Northern 10 Athletic Conference boys basketball teams released Monday. Hayman was joined on the first team locally by teammate Chris Klopp, Carey’s Hayden Stone, Upper Sandusky’s Mason Vent and Wynford’s Josh Crall.

Either two-time defending champion Don McLaughlin or Roger Ball will earn a spot in the finals of the Wyandot Match Game Invitational bowling tournament at Wyandot Lanes. McLaughlin was a 686-536 winner over Jim Stansbery, while Ball defeated Dave Ross 730-703 in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket Sunday.

COLUMBUS — Carey junior Tanner May wanted a takedown for the lead and the state title. But Bluffton senior Deandre Nassar was ready. Trailing by two points in the third period, May got an escape and trailed by one point with 1:52 remaining.

The ball stopped going into the basket, and Willard began to pull further and further ahead as frustration mounted for Upper Sandusky on Saturday afternoon. The cold-shooting Rams simply could not keep up with the Crimson Flashes in a season-ending 60-36 loss in the Division III district final Saturday at Norwalk.

COLUMBUS — Carey junior Tanner May leaped in the arms of his coach Ryan Pratt, who carried him about 20-celebratory feet. Pratt also leaped in the air and bumped shoulders with Carey assistant wrestling coach Matt Lawrence, who high-fived Pratt as well.
