Blue Devils boys win 5-team home meet

CAREY — Carey’s boys were first and the girls second, while Riverdale’s boys and girls teams both took third in a five-team meet Tuesday at Carey. The Blue Devils boys topped Hopewell-Loudon 111-97 for first place, with Riverdale third with 76 points, Crestline fourth with 39 points and Vanlue fifth with 14 points.

New Riegel slugs its way past Upper

NEW RIEGEL — The New Riegel softball team scored early and often on the way to a 12-5 victory over Upper Sandusky on Tuesday at New Riegel. Trailing 3-2 after the first inning, the Blue Jackets scored one run in the second inning, five runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.

TIFFIN — Despite winning the first set in three of their matches, the Upper Sandusky tennis team dropped a 4-1 match to Tiffin Columbian on Tuesday at Tiffin Columbian. Levi Malone at No. 1 singles got the only victory of the day, defeating Colin Burkett 6-1, 6-1.

Upper track teams open with win in quad

MORRAL — Upper Sandusky’s girls and boys track and field teams opened the season with big wins in a quad-meet Tuesday at Ridgedale. The Rams girls scored 120.5 points to finish well ahead of the host Rockets with 55.5 points. Elgin topped Ridgemont 43-26 for third place. The Rams boys finished with 126 points, followed by Elgin with 56 points, Ridgedale with 41 points and Ridgemont with 16 points.

BUCYRUS — River Valley had a pair of big innings and beat Wynford 11-1 in a nonconference softball game Monday at Wynford. The Vikings (1-0) scored four times in the second inning and then blew the game open with a seven-run third inning. Wynford (0-3) had only two hits, both of them with two outs in the fourth inning to score its only run.

CAREY — Winless last season, Riverdale softball hung tough against a strong softball program, Carey, in a 6-2 Blue Devils victory to begin the season for both teams Monday at Water Works Park. The Falcons (0-1) answered two runs scored by the Blue Devils (1-0) with two of their own in the third inning. Carey scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and two runs in the sixth inning.
