CAREY — Carey’s boys were first and the girls second, while Riverdale’s boys and girls teams both took third in a five-team meet Tuesday at Carey. The Blue Devils boys topped Hopewell-Loudon 111-97 for first place, with Riverdale third with 76 points, Crestline fourth with 39 points and Vanlue fifth with 14 points.

NEW RIEGEL — The New Riegel softball team scored early and often on the way to a 12-5 victory over Upper Sandusky on Tuesday at New Riegel. Trailing 3-2 after the first inning, the Blue Jackets scored one run in the second inning, five runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.

TIFFIN — Despite winning the first set in three of their matches, the Upper Sandusky tennis team dropped a 4-1 match to Tiffin Columbian on Tuesday at Tiffin Columbian. Levi Malone at No. 1 singles got the only victory of the day, defeating Colin Burkett 6-1, 6-1.

MORRAL — Upper Sandusky’s girls and boys track and field teams opened the season with big wins in a quad-meet Tuesday at Ridgedale. The Rams girls scored 120.5 points to finish well ahead of the host Rockets with 55.5 points. Elgin topped Ridgemont 43-26 for third place. The Rams boys finished with 126 points, followed by Elgin with 56 points, Ridgedale with 41 points and Ridgemont with 16 points.

NEW RIEGEL — Trailing by two runs after the third inning, the Upper Sandusky baseball team scored three runs in the fifth inning, one in the sixth and two in the seventh inning in a 9-7 victory over New Riegel on Tuesday at New Riegel.

CAREY — The top of the first inning of the Riverdale baseball team’s game against Carey could have been a 1-2-3 inning. Instead, the first two Falcons batters reached base on infield errors, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Upper Sandusky got another dominant pitching outing, this time from Jason Holly, in a 7-0 victory against Kenton in nonconference baseball action Monday. Holly (1-0) gave up just two hits and two walks with 13 strikeouts in the shutout.

BUCYRUS — Wynford blew open a close game with a big fifth inning to pick up its first baseball win of the season, 13-3, in five innings over River Valley on Monday. The Royals (1-1) scored twice in the first inning and twice more in the third to go up 4-1.

BUCYRUS — River Valley had a pair of big innings and beat Wynford 11-1 in a nonconference softball game Monday at Wynford. The Vikings (1-0) scored four times in the second inning and then blew the game open with a seven-run third inning. Wynford (0-3) had only two hits, both of them with two outs in the fourth inning to score its only run.

CAREY — Winless last season, Riverdale softball hung tough against a strong softball program, Carey, in a 6-2 Blue Devils victory to begin the season for both teams Monday at Water Works Park. The Falcons (0-1) answered two runs scored by the Blue Devils (1-0) with two of their own in the third inning. Carey scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and two runs in the sixth inning.
