Riverdale girls soccer earns No. 1 spot

The Riverdale girls soccer team earned the No. 1 seed during soccer sectional draws held Sunday. The Falcons (11-2-2) have a bye into the sectional finals and will host the winner of No. 8 Allen East (7-6-1) against No. 6 Cory-Rawson (6-7-1) at 7 p.m. Oct. 18.

Frey lifts Falcons to win

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Reygan Frey scored three times in the second half to help Division III Riverdale top Division I Sylvania Southview, 3-2, in a non-conference girls soccer match Saturday. The Cougars held a 1-0 lead at the break before three straight goals by Frey.

Tigers top Royals, 3-0

ATTICA — Aubrey Saylors and Bonnie Bivens combined for 15 kills as Seneca East swept Wynford, 25-9, 25-13, 25-18, in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday. Macey Zinser led the offensive attack for the Royals (6-14, 4-10 N10) with five kills on 13-of-14 hitting in addition to two aces, and Jenna Coffman had three kills along with 10 assists.

Carey boys 3rd at Fostoria

FOSTORIA — Carey’s boys took third place, and Mohawk’s Destini Oler was fifth to lead area participants Saturday in the Fostoria Boosters Cross Country Invitational. The Blue Devils boys were edged, 123-124, for second place in the Black Division.

Upper girls 5th at Harding

MARION — Upper Sandusky’s girls were fifth, and the boys finished 15th on Saturday in the Marion Harding Invitational. Buckeye Valley won the girls title, 59-95, over Jonathan Alder.

Kin has 14 kills in sweep of Ridgedale

MORRAL — Carey made quick work of Ridgedale with a 25-8, 25-9, 25-11 victory in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday. Sydney Kin had 14 kills on 35-of-36 hitting with two blocks, and Bailey Neal served five aces on an 18-of-18 effort.

Upper Sandusky holds on for 20-14 win

BUCYRUS — Despite being plagued by penalties, Upper Sandusky’s sideline still was able to jump for joy thanks in part to a large defensive stop late to help secure a 20-14 win against Northern 10 rival Bucyrus. Rams linebacker Nate McMillan broke up a potential game-tying fourth-and-long pass from Redmen quarterback Ben Seibert to wide receiver Harley Robinson in the end zone on the game’s final play, helping the Rams (2-5, 2-2 N10) secure their second win.

ATTICA — As long as there is a chance to win, Ed Phillips’ kids believe they can do it. After a go-ahead touchdown with 45 seconds left pushed Seneca East over the top in a 24-21 win against Mohawk on Friday, Phillips led his team to the sideline to sing the alma matter with the home crowd, and then to the student section behind the end zone to celebrate, all the while pumping his fist and shouting.

McComb wins with big 2nd-quarter stretch

MOUNT BLANCHARD — The McComb Panthers dominated the second quarter en route to a 42-19 win over the Riverdale Falcons on Friday night. McComb (6-1, 5-0 BVC) scored the only points of the first quarter when Clay Santos ran through the middle of the Falcons defense for a 41-yard touchdown with 6:02 left in the opening period.

Blue Devils have efficient 45-0 win over Bucks

CAREY — The Carey Blue Devils were nearly flawless Friday night in a 45-0 thumping of Buckeye Central. Carey (6-1, 4-1 Northern 10 Athletic Conference) committed just one 5-yard penalty, punted just once and didn’t turn the ball over in a game in which they nearly scored on every offensive possession.
