Upper Sandusky and Hopewell-Loudon split in a pair of one-run games Saturday in nonconference baseball action, with the Chieftains winning the opener 8-7 in nine innings and the Rams taking the second game 7-6. Hopewell-Loudon scored four times in the top of the seventh to tie the game at six before Upper Sandusky won it in the bottom of the seventh on a Diago Cazares RBI. He finished with three hits and two runs in that game.

Hopewell-Loudon rallied in the opener for a 7-6 win in eight innings but Upper Sandusky took an 8-2 victory in the second game of a softball double header Saturday at Upper Sandusky. The Rams (5-5) led 5-1 after four innings in the opener, but the Chieftains scored twice in the fifth inning and then three times to take the lead in the seventh inning.

CAREY — Hailey Niederkohr had six hits, and Bridget Mullholand finished the day with four as Carey split a softball double header with Lucas, falling 3-2 in eight innings and then run ruling the Cubs 12-2 in five innings in the second game Saturday at Waterworks Park.

SYCAMORE — Mohawk hit three home runs on the day but used some small ball to finish off a nonconference softball sweep of South Central on Saturday. After winning 12-2 in the opener, the Warriors bunted for a pair of hits and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, walking off 11-10 winners in the second game.

SHELBY — Wynford’s Alizhah Watson won two events and Mohawk’s Taeylor Mullholand won one to lead area athletes Saturday in the Shelby Invitational track and field meet. Watson took first in the 100 dash in 11.50 and the 200 dash in 22.70.

KENTON — Upper Sandusky’s girls and boys both won the championships in the Kenton Relays on Friday night at Kenton. The Rams girls won by a fairly wide margin, 102-80, over Kenton, with Riverdale and Bellefontaine both finishing just out of second place with 76 points.

BUCYRUS — The Wynford softball team had its best performance of the year, shutting out Ridgedale 10-0 in five innings in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference softball game Friday at Wynford. Hannah Messmer (2-3) threw a one-hit shutout, striking out nine in five innings.

With two runners on and one out in the sixth inning of a tie game, Carey had just who it wanted at the plate, and she delivered. Two-time All-Ohioan Hailey Niederkohr blasted a three-run home run over the right field fence, and the Blue Devils held on for a 9-7 victory against Upper Sandusky in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference softball game Friday at Upper Sandusky.

In the offseason, Upper Sandusky senior pitcher Jason Holly, with help from pitcher and teammate Brenyn Marquart, focused on improving his command and getting ahead of hitters. It’s paying off. Holly threw what is believed to be a complete game no hitter in five innings as the Upper Sandusky baseball team overwhelmed Carey 14-0 in a run-rule victory Friday at Upper Sandusky.

Levi Malone won dominantly and Upper Sandusky won three of four close matches to take a 4-1 victory against Bellevue in a boys tennis match Friday at Upper Sandusky.
