LEXINGTON — Former Wynford running back Blake Sparks and his North All-Stars teammates inserted the play into their playbook on the final day of practice. That play was a pass from former Seneca East running back Blaine Swartzmiller to Sparks, and with 3:08 remaining in the third quarter of the North Central Ohio All-Star Game on Saturday at Lexington, the North pulled the trigger on it.

Upper Sandusky’s girls soccer, basketball and volleyball programs are dropping to Division III this year, while the boys basketball team is moving up to Division II.

The Upper Sandusky Black Marlins hosted a swim meet Wednesday at Harrison Smith Park, with the girls beating Mount Gilead 168-70 and the boys winning 132-122.

FOREST — Riverdale Soccer Club is hosting tryouts for U15 and U13 co-ed travel teams on Tuesday. Both boys and girls born in 2005, 2006 and 2007 are invited to try out for &15, and 2007, 2008 and 2009 for U13.

COLUMBUS — Jon Diebler and a team of Ohio State alumni are back in The Basketball Tournament and get to begin this year’s event close to home. Carmen’s Crew, formerly known as Scarlet & Gray, was assigned the No. 1 seed in the Columbus regional of the tournament to be played July 19-21 at The Capital Center at Capital University in Bexley.

XENIA — Upper Sandusky’s Brett Montgomery shot a second-round 77 to finished tied for 14th in the Ohio Junior Amateur on Wednesday at WGC Golf Club. Montgomery began the tournament with a 1-under par 70 that put him within two strokes of the lead but he was not able to stay in contention Wednesday.

XENIA — Upper Sandusky’s Brett Montgomery is tied for fifth place after one round in the Ohio Junior Championships at WGC Golf Course. Montgomery shot a first-round 1-under-par 70 and is two strokes back of leader Carsten Judge, of Columbus. Conner Stevens, Ethan Snyder and Trevor Binau are tied for second with 69s.

ATHENS, W.Va. — Trent Howard, a 2013 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, was named the men’s golf coach and an assistant men’s basketball coach at Concord University on Monday. Howard spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant for the University of Akron men’s basketball team. He was a team manager with the Zips for three seasons before that.

Upper Sandusky’s Jason Holly will represent the Green team in the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Series on Thursday and Friday at Bill Davis Stadium at Ohio State University. The Green team faces the Navy Blue team at 1:20 p.m. Thursday and the Royal Blue team at 4 p.m. Thursday. It faces the Red team at 10:05 a.m. Friday.
