BUCYRUS — Area athletes already have qualified for regionals in five events, with a slew of others in position to do so in the finals after the first day of competition in the Division III district track and field meet Thursday at Bucyrus.

Upper Sandusky did not take long to show it was set on winning its fourth Northern 10 Athletic Conference softball title in five years. The Rams jumped on Wynford for seven runs in the first inning Thursday on the way to a 10-0 victory in five innings to lock up what will be at least a share of the league title.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Like so many times this season, the Riverdale baseball team had a shot to win a close game late, but it could not do it. Arcadia took advantage of an error in the seventh inning and scored three times to rally past the Falcons for a 6-4 victory in a Division IV sectional final baseball game Thursday at Riverdale.

SYCAMORE — Mohawk starting pitcher Cole Widmer noticed that Mansfield St. Peter’s hitters weren’t hitting his curveball, so he pounded the zone with his curveball and mixed in a fastball, often throwing it inside, where it was most likely to be called.

BOWLING GREEN — Next season, qualifying for districts will be an expectation, not a surprise. It was the message that Upper Sandusky tennis coach Aaron Frazee instilled in the doubles team of Grant Bower and Anson Hill following their 6-0, 6-2 loss to Clyde seniors Jacob Strudthoff and James Dry in the Division II district tennis tournament Thursday at Bowling Green State University.

FINDLAY — Riverdale’s girls 3200 relay and Tayler Ashburn in the high jump are moving on to regional competition, and the Falcons will have chances for several others to join them after the first day of Division III district competition Thursday at Findlay.

In a preview of today’s Division III sectional final, Upper Sandusky pulled away for a 12-3 victory against Wynford to wrap up both team’s regular seasons. Both teams opted to keep their top pitchers available for today when the teams will meet again at 5 p.m. at Upper Sandusky with a spot in the district tournament at stake.

TIFFIN — Trailing by two runs heading into the sixth inning, the Riverdale softball team scored four runs in the top of the sixth to pull away for a 5-3 victory over Tiffin Columbian in a nonconference softball game Thursday at Tiffin Columbian.

BUCYRUS — The Bucyrus Public Library will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on May 27. The library also will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 31 for the purpose of staff CPR/AED training in the morning and will open at 2 p.m. The library apologizes for the inconvenience.

OAK HARBOR — Upper Sandusky’s girls track and field team advanced to the finals in five events, while the boys will run again in just one event based on results from the first day of Division II district competition Wednesday at Oak Harbor.
