Freshman May takes 6th place

COLUMBUS — Tanner May ended his freshman season with three straight losses in the state tournament, but his two championship bracket wins were good enough to finish sixth at 182 pounds. Saturday, May faced a familiar opponent in the consolation finals after dropping down with a loss against two-time champ and eventual runner-up James Handwerk in the championship semis Friday night.

Draper becomes 3-time All Ohioan

COLUMBUS — Cole Draper could not beat the three-time champ, but he is assured of placing for a third time. The Mohawk senior lost by technical fall, 23-7, to Mechanicsburg’s Kaleb Romero on Friday morning before recovering with an 8-3 victory over Christian Blank in the consolation bracket to get to the podium.

May makes semis, locks up place in 182’s top 6

COLUMBUS — Tanner May felt his opponent’s weight and made his move. The Carey freshman broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown in the final 15 seconds of his Division III 182-pound championship quarterfinal against Versailles’ Jerome Bey on Friday morning at the state wrestling tournament in the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State University.

Clary dominates 1st match

COLUMBUS — Noah Clary was about as dominant as he could have been in a match that went into the third period. Up 18-3 after a third-period takedown, Clary held on for a pin in 4:19 over Unioto’s Ben Davenport in the preliminary round of the state tournament at the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State on Thursday.

Draper wins, 3-1

COLUMBUS — The scoring was nice and low, just how Cole Draper likes it. Draper advanced in the state wrestling tournament with a 3-1 decision victory over Rittman’s Manny Garza on Thursday at the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State University.

May strong in debut

COLUMBUS — If there were any nerves, Tanner May sure didn’t show them. Carey’s first freshman state qualifier since 1989 made a strong first impression with an 8-2 decision victory over Austin Carroll, of Zane Trace, in the opening round of the state wrestling tournament at the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State University on Thursday.
