CAREY — In its first year in a new building, Carey Elementary School is implementing a brand new program. The district is beginning reading recovery this fall to help start young students off on the right foot.

A special guest unveiled a new hands-on learning project Wednesday night as Team Newell second-graders at Union Elementary School got pumped up for learning, Ohio State Buckeyes-style, in a partnership with the National Elks Foundation and local Elks Lodge.

Catherine Gillen, 93, of Upper Sandusky, defended her championship title in the second annual Hannah’s House adult spelling bee Saturday night at the Star Theatre. A 17-year-old high school senior from Wyandot County won the county’s first grand champion title for market barrows at this year’s Ohio State Fair, which ran July 27 to Aug. 7.
