COLUMBUS GROVE — Last fall, Columbus Grove football coach Andy Schafer, donned in Carey blue, watched from the stands as his nephew, Carey running back and linebacker Willie Schafer, played in both of Carey’s playoff games.

SYCAMORE — Leipsic is not a typical No. 8 seed because Division VII’s Region 26 is not a typical region. The Blanchard Valley Conference runner-up Vikings visit state-ranked No. 1 and top-seeded Mohawk on Saturday night in a regional quarterfinal that is not expected to be a mismatch the 1-8 game often is.

COLUMBUS — Only a few runners at Carey High School have qualified as individuals for the cross country state meet during the tenure of coach Dean Kessler. Carey’s Sarah Reinhart is the third freshman to qualify as an individual and will be running in the Division III girls race at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.

COLUMBUS — Riverdale senior Kendra Collier isn’t nervous to run at the state meet Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron. Collier, the first Riverdale runner to compete at the state competition since 2001 and the first female since the early 1980s, also is the first runner in the tenure of coach Kim Rall to qualify for state.

COLUMBUS GROVE — Statistically, Carey and Columbus Grove look a lot alike. The Division VI Region 22 No. 5 Blue Devils and No. 4 Bulldogs both have 7-3 records. Led by big offensive lines, both teams have run for more yards than they have passed for but have taken to the air effectively when they do.

Riverdale’s Gage Murphy and Alec Loveridge earned second-team honors, while Aiden Vent and Justin Scott picked up third-team honors on the All-Blanchard Valley Conference football team. Murphy was picked as a second-team defensive back.

Mohawk’s Madi Chester and Eric Hoover earned top honors on the All-Northern 10 Athletic Conference volleyball team released Monday as player and coach of the year, respectively. Chester, a senior outside hitter, led the league in kills per set at 4.89, more than one more than the next-best total.

Upper Sandusky’s Brett Montgomery was named player of the year, and Graham Treadway was coach of the year on the All-Daily Chief-Union golf team. Montgomery, a junior, was the Northern 10 Athletic Conference’s player of the year for the third straight season with a league-best 35.5 strokes per nine holes average, nearly three strokes better than second-best in the league.

Upper Sandusky High School is searching for a boys basketball announcer for the 2018-19 season. Pay is $20 per night and no experience is necessary.
