Tigers carry hot start to 9-2 district final win

FINDLAY — Starting with the first batter, things simply did not go well for the Carey softball team Thursday. Makenna Ray lined the second pitch of the game down the right field line for a home run, sparking a four-run first inning and leading North Baltimore to a 9-2 victory against Carey in a Division IV district final Thursday at the Findlay Marathon Diamonds.

BUCYRUS — Several local athletes punched their tickets to regional competition during the first day of Division III track and field competition Thursday at Bucyrus. In girls competition, Carey’s Lilly Adkins and Dana Worst in the discus, Wynford’s Lainey Holman in the high jump and Mohawk’s Taeylor Mullholand in the high jump and the 3200 relay team all had top-four finishes to qualify for next week’s regionals.

GALION — When Mohawk put a run on the board in the fourth inning, it seemed like it could be just what it needed to lead to a victory Wednesday in a Division IV district semifinal game at Galion’s Heise Park. But South Central used an infield hit and a walk to spark a three-run bottom of the fourth on its way to a 6-1 victory.

Rams’ Ham qualifies for regionals

OAK HARBOR — Upper Sandusky’s Dylan Ham qualified for regional competition, and teammate Joey Verdugo just missed joining him Wednesday in the first day of Division II track and field district competition at Oak Harbor. Ham finished third in the shot put with a throw of 51-4.5. The top four placers in each event advance to next week’s regionals.

FINDLAY — When senior Blayc Hacker transferred to Carey to play softball, she brought lofty goals of trying to accomplish everything last season’s team accomplished, most notably, a deep tournament run. After her performance on Wednesday, she and her teammates are one step closer to achieving that goal.

ATTICA — Alivia Oney threw a two-hitter and hit three singles at the plate to lead Upper Sandusky to a 6-0 win to close out the season Wednesday in Northern 10 Athletic Conference softball play. With the win, the Rams (12-11, 9-7 N10) finished above .500 both overall and in the league and ahead of the Tigers (12-9, 8-8 N10) for fourth place in the standings.

Bucyrus wins to get title share

BUCYRUS — Cayleigh Rister threw a one-hitter as Bucyrus topped Wynford, 7-0, to clinch a share of the Northern 10 Athletic Conference softball championship Wednesday at Bucyrus. The Redmen (16-6, 13-3 N10) split the league championship with Carey (19-6, 13-3 N10).

SHELBY — Mohawk’s offense has been on fire, and no one has been hotter than first baseman Tess Weinandy. The sophomore slugged a key three-run home run in the third inning to lead the way in the Warriors’ 10-3 victory against top-seeded Monroeville in a Division IV district semifinal game Tuesday at Shelby.
