BUCYRUS — It’s a position he’s held before, but this time it came as a surprise. Shortly after learning that Wynford boys basketball coach Jason Engel had resigned, Steve Mohr offered to support and help one of the candidates who applied for the job.

Wyandot County takes part in the Parade of Athletes during the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics Summer Games on Friday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

MARYSVILLE — One local golfer competed in the Heart of Ohio Junior Golf Association’s third tournament of the series on Wednesday at the Marysville Golf Course. Owen Knapp, of Upper Sandusky, finished in 11th place in the 13-15 class with a score of 101.

The Upper Sandusky Kiwanis 5K Fun Run, 3K walk and 1-mile Kids Fun Run is 7 p.m. July 27. Check-in is 6 p.m. The Kids Fun Run begins at 6:30 p.m., and the Fun Run begins at 7 p.m. at the Upper Sandusky Reservoir.

SYCAMORE — The Sycamore Soccer League is accepting registrations through July 15. Area players age 5 by Aug. 1 through eighth grade are welcome to join the recreational league.

Special Olympics Ohio provides its athletes many opportunities every year but the Summer Games weekend is what most athletes enjoy the most. Wyandot County will send 38 athletes to Columbus to compete in six sports at the event Friday through Sunday.

Dylan Ham, his right leg slightly bent and located behind his left foot, holds the shot put on his shoulder next to his head. He rotates 180 degrees and fires the shot, which lands halfway up the shot put area.

Bookie’s Lawn Service scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat Andersons 5-1 in a Junior League girls fast pitch softball game Wednesday at Harrison Smith Park. Lauren Parker got the win on the mound, pitching three innings with two hits, no walks one earned run and eight strikeouts.

If the tournament accomplishments are any indication, many more victories may be on the horizon for Cory Sayre, an avid billiards player from Upper Sandusky, and his teammates. Sayre and his teammates from Avenue Cue in Findlay — the same team that played together all year and won the league championship in Findlay — placed ninth out of more than 330 teams in the World Pool Championships in late May/early June at Bally’s Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
