MONROEVILLE — On a night when both teams were struggling offensively, Tiffin Columbian’s combination of point guard Kaia Woods and forward Abby Dryfuse gave the Tornadoes just enough. Woods scored 15 points, while Dryfuse had 14 points to lead the Tornadoes to a 40-33 victory against the Rams in a Division II sectional final Saturday evening at Monroeville.

FREMONT — Carey was not about to let All-Ohio 6-foot-3 sophomore Makayla Elmore beat them Saturday night. Instead, Olivia Zender and Hopewell-Loudon’s defense did in a 45-21 Chieftains victory in a Division IV sectional final at Fremont Ross. The Blue Devils held Elmore to 2 points in the first half, but Zender finished with four 3-pointers and 17 points on the night while Carey made just 4 of 22 shots in the first three quarters, not reaching double digits until a putback at the third-quarter buzzer.

SHELBY — As soon as Buckeye Central senior forward Courtney Pifher found her stroke from 3-point range, there was little the Mohawk girls basketball team could do. Using a 1-3-1 zone defensively, the Warriors hoped to limit the Bucks’ second-half offensive opportunities.

CLYDE — Upper Sandusky had four sectional runners-up amongst five district qualifiers during Division II sectional wrestling action Saturday at Clyde. Gage Ebert, Emery Pahl, Brayzin McDaniel and Ashton Shepherd all finished second in their weight classes while Blake Herbert was fourth in his.

VAN BUREN — Mohawk qualified eight wrestlers while Carey and Riverdale advanced four each for the district wrestling tournament during Division III sectional action this weekend at Van Buren. The Blue Devils’ Tanner May was the only sectional champion among the 16 area district qualifiers, winning the 182-pound weight class.

SYCAMORE — Mohawk had a senior night to remember. The Warriors gave up only three points in the first quarter and went on a huge second-quarter run while blowing out Ridgedale 87-37 to close out the regular season Friday night at Mohawk.

BUCYRUS — The Wynford boys basketball team played with high intensity early on senior night, but Upper Sandusky finished strong in every quarter to play spoiler and close out the regular season with a 62-44 victory over the Royals in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference game on Friday at Wynford.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — With just four seconds left and down one point to Hopewell-Loudon on senior night, the Riverdale Falcons were set to inbound the ball behind the Chieftains’ basket.

CAREY — Carey junior center Hayden Stone’s free throws weren’t falling. But his layups, jumpers and putbacks were. Although he was 2 of 8 from the free-throw line, Stone scored 32 points, including 13 in the second quarter, to help the Carey boys basketball team erase an early six-point deficit to overwhelm the Bucyrus Redmen 79-57 on Friday at Carey High School.

VAN BUREN — Mohawk advanced six wrestlers, Carey four and Riverdale three into the semifinals on the first day of Division III sectional wrestling Friday evening at Van Buren. The Warriors’ Caden Gurney (132 pounds), Morgan Price (145), Austin England (152), Grant Theis (170), Kaleb Leeth (182) and James Clouse (220) all reached the semifinals, assuring them of placing at least sixth in the tournament.
