Ada tennis tops Upper 4-1

ADA — Upper Sandusky suffered a 4-1 loss to Ada on Monday at Ohio Northern University but got the experience it hoped for before Thursday’s sectional boys tennis tournament. “Ada has a really talented team,” Upper Sandusky coach Aaron Frazee said.

Mohawk scores 8 times in 6th inning to sweep Van Buren

SYCAMORE — Mohawk scored eight times in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Van Buren 13-8 and take a sweep after winning the opener 5-3 in a baseball double header Saturday at Mohawk. The Warriors (14-3) scored to quickly erase a 1-0 deficit in the first game with three runs in the bottom of the first. In the second game, Mohawk trailed 8-5 before breaking out with the huge inning.

Royals’ Watson 1st in 3 events

MOUNT GILEAD — Alizhah Watson was part of three first-place finishes for Wynford in the Mount Gilead Indian Invitational track and field meet Saturday. Watson won the 200 dash in 22.68 and the 400 dash in 51.63. He also was part of the Royals’ winning 400 relay team that finished in 44.72.

Rams, Warriors receive No. 1 seeds in district baseball draws

Upper Sandusky and Mohawk both earned No. 1 seeds in baseball district draws held Sunday. The Rams (14-4) are the top seed in the Division III Shelby district and earned a bye into the 5 p.m. May 17 sectional finals. They will host the winner of No. 10 Western Reserve and No. 12 Wynford (5-13), who play in one of the sectional semifinal games, all of which are set for 5 p.m. May 15 hosted by the higher seeded school.

Relays lead Carey boys to 4th place

ADA — Led by their relay teams, Carey’s boys finished in fourth place in the Ada Invitational track and field meet Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. Van Wert ran away with the boys championship with 150 points, while Bluffton took second with 100 points. Cory-Rawson edged Carey 59-50.5 for fourth place. Mohawk, minus some key athletes, finished 16th with 3.5 points.

Upper boys, Mohawk girls win N10 titles

Upper Sandusky’s boys and Mohawk’s girls won the team titles in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference Championships junior high track and field meet Saturday at Upper Sandusky. The Rams boys ran away with the title, scoring 140 points, followed by Colonel Crawford in second with 93 points, Seneca East in third with 90 points, Mohawk in fourth with 84 points and Carey in fifth with 76 points. Wynford was eighth with 22 points.

Upper gets 5-0 sweep of Willard

Levi Malone pulled out a close victory at No. 1 singles, and the rest of the Upper Sandusky boys tennis lineup rolled in a 5-0 sweep of Willard on Friday at Upper Sandusky. “It’s always nice to get a 5-0 win late in the season,” Upper Sandusky coach Aaron Frazee said.

Upper native throws first career 300 game

Before April 5, Keith Messmer’s personal best bowling score was a 279. But on April 5, Messmer rolled a personal best 10 consecutive strikes. With the possibility of a 300 game suddenly a reality after he threw another strike in the 10th frame, he prepared for the final roll of the 10th frame, his knees knocking and hands shaking as all eyes in the facility were on him.
