CAREY — With the exception of one set, the top two teams in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference played exactly the kind of match one would expect with the margins in each set decided by the minimum two points. In the end, it was Buckeye Central winning two of those three close sets and adding a decisive victory in the second set to hand Carey its first loss of the season, 25-23, 25-10, 29-31, 25-23, on Thursday night.

CAREY — Jacob Wentz is a new member of Carey Council. He was approved by council members in a vote Tuesday to replace the late Councilwoman Lois Kurtz who died last month.

The Little Rams and Upper Sandusky Middle School competition teams finished their summer seasons with first-place finishes in the Carey Cheer Competition.

The Upper Sandusky Service Committee has a new member. Andy Voorheis replaces Hank Latham, who died in July.

BUCYRUS — Upper Sandusky’s top boys cross country runners like to go at about the same pace. Led by Andrew Kurtz in seventh in 19:15.65 and Troy Mawer in eighth in 19:17.61, the Rams were the top boys team in the Wynford Invitational on Tuesday.

SYCAMORE — Wynford has shown at times this year that it can play with the best teams of the area, but Mohawk did not let that happen Tuesday night. The Warriors went on big runs and rolled past the Royals, 25-11, 25-13, 25-14.

CAREY — Carey Exempted Village Schools has hired three new staff members for the 2017-18 school year. They are Brooke Bennett, Bailey Seevers and Darrin Hammock. Additionally, Danielle Willman is a new, full-time preschool teacher at the school through the North Central Ohio Educational Service Center.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Riverdale gave undefeated Kenton everything it had on the soccer field on Saturday night. In the end, however, the Wildcats were able to find the back of the net twice, as Landon Bartlett and Drew Hoppe tallied second-half goals on the way to a 2-0 victory.

A local couple is teaming with an Upper Sandusky church to collect donations for victims of Hurricane Harvey. The Category 4 storm made landfall in southern Texas the night of Aug. 25, packing 130 mph winds and dousing the area with as much as 50 inches of rain in nine days. Nearly 40 inches of rain fell near the town of Dayton between the night of Aug. 25 and early the morning of Aug. 28.
