The City of Upper Sandusky gained a new fire chief Monday evening at the Upper Sandusky City Council meeting. Mike MaGinn was sworn in by Upper Sandusky Mayor Scott Washburn as the new Upper Sandusky fire chief, taking the place of Lynn Yeater, who retired at the end of December.

FOSTORIA — The Upper Sandusky junior high wrestling team took first place Saturday in the Fostoria Duals. The Rams went 5-0, defeating Findlay Glenwood 70-24, Gibsonburg 66-15, Carey 60-26, Elmwood 43-42 and Findlay Donnell 42-33.

Several mailboxes were reported vandalized over the weekend in rural Upper Sandusky. The Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office reported it believed several mailboxes were smashed by a hand-held item early Saturday morning after an eastbound vehicle stopped on CH 128 towards Nevada.

As the Upper Sandusky girls basketball team shared the ball, passed to open teammates for a higher quality shot and broke Mohawk’s 2-3 zone with cutters, a tear could be seen in an eye of Upper Sandusky coach Jerry Vent. The Rams offensive efficiency, coupled with converting on turnovers, enabled the Rams to take a 24-point lead into halftime, setting the tone for the Rams’ 67-32 victory over the Warriors on Saturday at Upper Sandusky High School.

As well as Lexington’s Kyle Johnston shot the ball last season, he had been marred in a shooting slump so far this season. He broke out of it on Saturday. Johnston, a 6-foot-2 guard, made a career-high eight 3-pointers and led all scorers with 24 points, another career high, as the Lexington boys basketball team overwhelmed Upper Sandusky 76-50 at Upper Sandusky High School.

MORRAL — The Carey girls basketball team found a formula to be successful on offense. The Blue Devils got 22 offensive rebounds and made 24 of 35 free throws in a 47-38 victory Saturday at Ridgedale. Carey (2-9, 2-5 Northern 10 Athletic Conference) entered averaging just 29.7 points per game on 29.9 percent shooting from the floor and 48.7 percent shooting at the foul line.

Marshall James Weaver was the first baby born at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in 2019. He arrived at 8:25 a.m. Jan, 2; weighed 7 pounds, 7.5 ounces and measured 20.5 inches.

Upper Sandusky faces a big nonconference test on Saturday night, on Friday night, it looked ready. On the eve of a showdown with Lexington, the Rams dismantled Bucyrus in a 92-47 victory in Northern 10 Athletic Conference boys basketball play Friday night.

A property in rural Upper Sandusky suffered major structural damage from a fire late Thursday night. The Carey and Upper Sandusky fire departments were dispatched at 10:33 p.m. Thursday after visible flames were seen on a barn and tractor on a property on the west side of CH 112 just north of CH 44.

BUCYRUS — While Wynford’s girls basketball team still has not reached the level of consistency coach Amy Taylor-Sheldon is looking for, the Royals have been finding ways to get wins. Hot early shooting helped build a lead and Wynford took down Lucas 57-49 in nonconference action Thursday night at W.R. Donnenwirth Gymnasium.
