Graduates of the Wynford class of 2019 turn their tassels during the 56th annual commencement exercises Saturday evening at Wynford High School.

SHELBY — Pitching and defense kept Upper Sandusky close long enough for the offense to finally break through. No-hit into the fifth inning, the Rams scored four runs on three hits in their final two at-bats and celebrated a Division III district championship Saturday behind Brenyn Marquart’s shutdown outing in a 4-1 victory against Gibsonburg at Shelby.

LEXINGTON — As soon as Upper Sandusky junior Chloe Taylor finished her 400 race at the regional finals of the Division II regional track and field meet on Saturday at Lexington, she said her training for next season will begin the following day.

Students at Upper Sandusky High School, as part of classroom assignments, helped to kick off the Click-It-Or-Ticket campaign, which started May 20 and will continue through June 2. Claire Russell with Wyandot County Public Health explained that the department has been holding video contests for the past five years in which students at all county schools are invited to create a 30 second video revolving around the message of the click-it-or-ticket campaign, which urges drivers and passengers to buckle up while on the road.

GALION — In their three matchups against the Colonel Crawford baseball team this season, Mohawk scored two runs in 25 innings. Seven of those 25 innings were in Friday’s district final at Galion High School, a complete-game pitching performance by Gavin Feichtner, in which he only allowed one run and three hits in the Eagles’ 8-1 victory over the Warriors.

TIFFIN — Talking about it brought Wynford coach Amber (Rall) Groves to tears. She knows all too well what star runner Alizhah Watson is experiencing. Groves, who had her senior season cut short at regionals in 2002 because of a pulled hamstring, watched as Watson came up limping with an injury during the 400 relay in the regional finals Friday at Heidelberg University’s Hoernemann Stadium in Tiffin.

Wyandot County Dog Warden Andy Niederkohr has been at the job for nearly 24 years. Niederkohr is responsible for enforcing the dog laws in Wyandot County and also manages the Wyandot County dog shelter, located at 7790 Ohio 199 in Upper Sandusky.

SHELBY — Thirteen strikeouts isn’t a season high for Upper Sandusky senior pitcher Jason Holly. He struck out 17 in a win earlier in the season, and had struck out 13 batters three separate times before Thursday’s contest. But in the Upper Sandusky baseball team’s 11-2 victory over Oak Harbor in the district semifinals Thursday at Shelby, Holly added to his 80 strikeouts on the season, pitching a complete game and allowing just five hits and two runs, striking out the side in one inning and retiring the Rockets in order in the second, third and fifth innings.

LEXINGTON — Upper Sandusky’s Chloe Taylor picked the perfect time to run her personal best time in the 400 dash. Running in the eighth lane in the second heat of the preliminaries of the 400 dash at the regional track and field meet Thursday at Lexington, Taylor finished eighth overall in 1:01.72 and qualified for the regional finals of the 400 dash Saturday.
