Carey’s Landen Kemerley led area All-Ohio selections from Divisions VI and VII as a first-team pick as a linebacker as released by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association Monday.

Teammate Brock Bushong received third-team honors in Division VI, while Lane Rickle, Matt Allomong, Nathan Brodman and Gage Summit received honorable mention.

Wynford’s Kalen Skidmore picked up honorable mention in Division VI, and in Division VII, Mohawk’s Zaiden Fry was a second-team pick, with Jace Margraf earning honorable mention.

Kemerley, a senior, earned his spot as a linebacker. The Northern 10 Athletic Conference defensive player of the year paced the league’s top defense with 110 tackle, including 27.5 for loss. He had 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and, most impressively, three defensive touchdowns.

“We had a really good season, 11-1, and won the league, and Landen did a terrific job in his four years of playing linebacker for us,” Carey coach Jonathon Mershman said. “He’s very deserving of that award of being first-team All-Ohio. He’s going to be one tough cookie to replace next year.”

Instincts, in addition to his natural ability, are what separated Kemerley from others, Mershman said.

“He found his way around the ball all the time,” Mershman said. “He did a really nice job of making good reads, was able to take on screens really well, and we were talking the other night that he had a fumble recovery for a touchdown every year one way or another. He just found his way around the ball.”

Bushong, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound senior was the only returning starter on the Blue Devils’ offensive line this fall and stepped into a leadership role.

“His junior year he had four other senior guys teaching him the ropes and this year, it was all on him to teach the other four, and he did a terrific job and was a big part of why we were 11-1 this year.”

He and Allomong helped the Blue Devils average 38.2 points and 359.8 yards per game, including a league-best 265.3 yards rushing per game. They averaged 6.3 yards per carry as a team.

A 6-4, 280-pound junior, Allomong will be the one who will need to step up as a leader on the line for Carey next season as a senior.

“With him coming back at left tackle, he’ll help develop the other guys along with himself throughout the offseason, and we’re thinking big things for him coming back next year.”

Rickle was named an All-Ohioan as a quarterback. The senior was second in the N10 in total rushing yards with 951 while averaging 7.9 yards per carry with 12 touchdowns. As a passer, he had a 53.7 completion percentage for 1,076 yards and 10 touchdowns.

“He was very dynamic,” Mershman said. “He kept the ball moving a lot of the times and was a bit part of why we were so successful on offense. He did a terrific job of coming in this year and leading this team.”

Summit, a senior, was selected as a defensive lineman after playing on the edge of the Blue Devils’ defense. He had 10 sacks and finished with 27 tackles for loss, 97 tackles and two forced fumbles.

“The last three years, he played a big part,” Mershman said. “This year he moved into more of a leadership role in setting our defense up and doing our checks, and he was an extremely smart player and very physical player and did all the nitty-gritty things you need done on the defensive side.”

Brodman, only a junior, was selected as another defensive lineman. He tied for the league lead with 10 sacks, was second in the N10 in tackles for loss with 35.5 and ranks seventh in tackles with 104. He forced three fumbles, recovered one and had an interception.

“As a junior this year, to be honorable mention, that’s a big honor,” Mershman said. “He’ll work extremely hard in the offseason for next year and hope to be moving up. This year, being the main guy up front, he demanded a lot of double-teams, and he was able to fight through those.”

Skidmore, a 6-0, 255-pound junior, was selected as an offensive lineman. He paved the way on the ground for the Royals as they averaged 4.4 yards per carry and 198.2 yards per game rushing.

“Kalen Skidmore is obviously one of the guys up front that we counted on to get the job done and drive guys off the ball,” Wynford coach Cyle Skidmore said. “He did a tremendous job doing that and obviously we’re going to look forward to him being even more dominant next year and spending even more time in the weight room and being a dominant player on the offensive line for us.”

Skidmore also was a big presence on the defensive line for Wynford, making 72 tackles, including 20.5 for loss with 3.5 sacks. He forced three fumbles and recovered three fumbles.

While this season did not go as well as the Royals had hoped, their prospects for next year are good with Skidmore just one of many talented young players returning.

“Our now-to-be seniors, I think they’re a talented group,” coach Skidmore said. “We have a lot of talent there, a  lot of leaders there, and I’ve got some sophomores there. We’ve got a lot of skill coming up, so as a whole we’re excited about it. We had our first day of lifting, and we had some good numbers, and we’re extremely excited to see that.”

Fry was named a second-team All-Ohioan for the second straight season, though last year it was as a wide receiver. This year, his selection came as a defensive back.

A senior, he came up with 65 tackles, including two for loss, and had two interceptions and one forced fumble. He returned one interception for a touchdown. On offense this year, he ended up with 336 yards and seven touchdowns rushing with 45 catches for 578 yards and four more touchdowns.

Margraf, a senior, was named an All-Ohioan as a linebacker. He led the Warriors with 107 tackles, making eight of them for loss with a pair of sacks.

All-Ohio selections for Divisions IV and V are to be released today.
