Riverdale’s Bry Vanden Bosch and Tayler Ashburn each were given honorable mention on the All-Blanchard Valley Conference volleyball team released recently. Ashburn, a junior, was the Falcons’ leading hitter, averaging 2.2 kills per set, and ranked as one of their top servers with 27 aces.

MILBURY — Oh, so close. After winning game 3 and having a game point in game 4, Upper Sandusky nearly pushed its match against Rossford to a game 5. But, the fifth-seeded Bulldogs won the last three points of the match to top ninth-seeded Upper Sandusky, 25-19, 25-22, 18-25, 29-27, in a Division II sectional semifinal at Lake High School on Tuesday.

DOLA — After winning the first two games of its sectional match against Riverdale on Tuesday night, Hardin Northern went into hibernation in game three. Fortunately for the Polar Bears, alarm bells went off midway through game four as they were able to pull out a 25-14, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21 victory in the Division IV sectional semifinal.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Normally, the Galion girls soccer team runs a 4-4-2 formation. During Tuesday’s Division III sectional semifinal girls soccer match against Riverdale, the Tigers’ strategy was to keep nine players behind the ball at all times, with one player playing up, which switched a little in the second half.

CRESTLINE — Lainey Holman’s statistics do not stand out in any one area, but her overall impact was evident Tuesday night when she was not in the match. Wynford was not the same team after her injury late in the third set, and Crestline rallied for a 14-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-17, 15-12 victory in a Division IV sectional semifinal match at Crestline.

LIMA — Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way. Robert Mooney’s midfield free kick in the final minute took a big hop, was deflected a couple of times, and Jacob Garver tapped it in for the game-winning goal with 14.1 seconds left as Bath handed Upper Sandusky a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat in a Division II sectional semifinal match Monday night in Lima.

KENTON — The Kenton girls soccer team beat Upper Sandusky 4-0 early in the season, but the Wildcats’ rematch with the Rams on Monday night in a sectional tournament opener did not prove to be quite as easy. The Wildcats needed more than 15 extra minutes of playing time before Hannah Holland was able to find the ball in a scramble in front of the Upper Sandusky net and knock the ball past Rams keeper Cortni Brown to give Kenton a 3-2 double overtime victory.

ATTICA — Carey freshman Sarah Reinhart never thought she would win seven cross country races this season. “If you would’ve asked me that at the beginning of the season, I probably would not have believed you,” Reinhart said.

COLUMBUS — A front nine where everything possible went wrong had Upper Sandusky junior golfer Brett Montgomery wondering how good he really was. He turned things around and showed everyone, including himself, just how talented he really is on the back nine.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Balloons were released. Flowers were handed out. And before the start of the Riverdale-Van Buren football game on Saturday, a moment of silence was held. Players from both teams took a knee before kickoff.
