Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Coming out on top in a game in which the teams combined to shoot 26.5 percent might be considered winning ugly to some, but not to Upper Sandusky coach Jerry Vent in his team’s 32-24 victory against Colonel Crawford on Tuesday night.

FOSTORIA — In the first half, the 3-point shooting of Mohawk guard Austin Tusing and guard/forward Hunter Gottfried kept the Warriors ahead. In the second half, it was the free throw shooting of Zach Hayman as well as Keith Jenkins and Tusing that enabled the Mohawk boys basketball team to hold off Fostoria’s comeback attempt in the late third quarter and early fourth quarter for a 67-53 victory over Fostoria on Tuesday at Fostoria High School.

NEW WASHINGTON — Wynford got into a quick deficit and was unable to recover in a 51-37 loss to defending Northern 10 Athletic Conference champion Buckeye Central on Tuesday night. The Buckettes (2-1, 1-0 N10) scored the first eight points of the game.

ATTICA — Once again, the Seneca East girls basketball team proved why it is one of the favorites to win the Northern 10 Athletic Conference. The Tigers outscored the Carey girls basketball team by six points in the first quarter, 13 points in the second quarter and seven points in the third quarter in a 59-29 victory over the Blue Devils on Tuesday at Seneca East High School.

The Upper Sandusky junior high wrestling team opened its season by winning its own event, the East of Chicago tournament, on Saturday. The Rams scored 204.5 points, finishing well ahead of Shelby with 131 points and Fostoria with 130 points. Riverdale was seventh with 22 points.

The Riverdale girls soccer team recently held its awards banquet.

Erin Merriman scored 13 points to lead the Upper Sandusky seventh grade girls basketball team to a 35-11 victory against Buckeye Central on Monday. Grace Metzger, Ryleigh Haas, Bailey Fox, Mazzy Shoemaker and Sophia Nichols all had 4 points.

Mason Vent scored 31 points on Saturday night and yet Upper Sandusky coach Jeff Winslow said it was not his best effort. It was, however, more than enough to lead the Rams to an 83-62 victory against Tiffin Columbian. The Upper Sandusky junior forward has 60 points in his first two games after scoring 29 in the season opener Friday night. “Not that he played bad, but it wasn’t one of his better games,” Winslow said.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — It had been a while — at least four years — since the Wynford girls basketball team defeated Riverdale. And even longer since the Royals turned the ball over eight times or less in a game. The last time was reportedly against Lucas in 2011.

CAREY — Hayden Stone had 19 points and 12 rebounds but it was not enough as Carey fell 61-51 to Van Buren on Saturday evening at Carey. Nick McCracken led the Black Knights (1-0) with 13 points in their season opener. Carson Goble finished with 11 points.
