COLUMBUS — The state fire marshal’s office is reminding Ohioans to check the date of residential smoke detectors during Fire Prevention Week, which kicks off Sunday. Established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Fire Prevention Week is a nationwide awareness campaign observed the Sunday through Saturday period in which Oct. 9 falls, state fire officials said during the “Feel the Heat” media day at the fire marshal’s office Friday in Reynoldsburg. Fire Prevention Week has been observed annually since 1922, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

After the introduction of all fall sports teams, songs by the USHS marching band, majorette and flag corps, cheers from the cheerleading squad and a game for the 2016 homecoming court, Mayor Scott Washburn took center stage to pump up students, parents and spectators alike with his message of hope and unity.

A Carey man pleaded guilty to two felony charges Monday that included one leading to the death of an Upper Sandusky man. Christopher B. Niederkohr pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony, and possession of heroin, a fifth-degree felony.

A hole in the ground allows a crew to install storm sewer lines near the intersection of East Wyandot Avenue and Fifth Street in Upper Sandusky. A crew from Underground Utilities Inc. is working roughly 20 feet below the surface of the street in less-than-desirable soil conditions, wastewater treatment plant supervisor Aaron Putnam said.

A premier historical landmark in Wyandot County has started to show its age, causing renovations to begin to be planned. The 187-year-old Overland Inn located in McCutchenville is the oldest building in the village and many of the original pieces of the structure are beginning to falter.
