Family starts petition to require signs for dams labeled ‘drowning machines’

The family of a pair of brothers who drowned in a Father’s Day accident on a low-head dam near Upper Sandusky has created a petition in an attempt to change the laws in the state and nation and require signs above and below the dams that are known as “deadly,” “death traps” and “drowning machines.” Since 2013, accidents have claimed the lives of three men on two occasions at a low-head dam on the southeast side of Upper Sandusky.

4-H members take home awards

First-place winners

The Wyandot County 4-H program recently recognized first- through third-place winners and Ohio State Fair qualifiers from its summer project judging. Qualifiers for the Ohio State Fair included Maggie Wisda, Nevin Boes, Emily Goldfuss, Leah Herring, Kathryn Polachek Sneider, Patyn Ogg, Mason Tyree, Roddy Traxler, Kallan Stiles, Lena Stiles, Gabbi Gobbs, Madison Kloepfer, Allison Keller, Anthony Zender, Summer Boullion, Zachary Koehler, Sara Scott, Katie Homburg and Colton Breidenbach.

The big gold bus stopped Tuesday night for a break after an exhausting day of travel from Marion, where it had stayed in the Once Upon a Child parking lot the night before. Everett Smith and John McKay each had ran about 13 miles earlier in the day. One ran down Old Lincoln Highway, while the other one drove ahead and waited for him.

Road closed

Road work

East Wyandot Avenue between Wilson’s Grocery and Pilot Travel Center was closed for several hours Monday for grinding of a rough portion of road at the intersection of Malabar Drive. Upper Sandusky streets supervisor Allen Boes said the road will be closed again Wednesday morning, weather permitting, for paving.

Big crowd for church

A crowd estimated by organizers at more than 1,200 people attended church services Sunday in Gormley Park to hear John Godwin of the A&E TV series “Duck Dynasty” speak on his experiences on the show and his Christian faith.
