Carey’s goal this year is to be in the mix to win the Northern 10 Athletic Conference, but after dropping its league opener last week, a win Monday at Upper Sandusky was essential. The Blue Devils got what they needed.

Upper Sandusky had little trouble defeating Madison, 5-0, in boys tennis Monday. Nate Hensel won 7-5, 6-1 against Chaise Lunsford in the No. 1 singles match, taking 12 of the final 13 games after trailing 5-1 in the first set.

While Carey shook off its rust, Upper Sandusky went up 8-0 on a pair of four-run innings in an 8-4 victory to open conference play. It was the first game in a week for the Blue Devils (1-1, 0-1 N10).

SYCAMORE — Tom and Barb Davidson announced the winner of the inaugural Wyandot County Big Buck Contest on Saturday afternoon surrounded by about 100 family members, friends and supporters at Roger’s Lake Conversation Club in rural Sycamore.

BUCYRUS — More than 200 people enjoyed an afternoon of free lunch, art and music Sunday at Wynford Elementary School. “We feel it’s important to give back to the families and allow them to come in and for the kids to showcase their talents musically and artistically,” Superintendent Fred Fox said.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Evan McKee homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning, and Riverdale was in control the rest of the game in a 5-1 non-conference baseball victory against Upper Sandusky on Saturday. The Falcons (2-1) added two unearned runs in the first inning and scored twice more in the second inning to provide plenty of run support for pitchers Trey Miller (1-1) and Jonathan Walter.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Upper Sandusky scored in four of five innings, including four runs or more in three of them, and rolled to a 17-0 non-conference softball victory against Riverdale on Saturday. The Rams (2-3) put four on the board in the first inning and then six more in the second.

Jennifer Rathburn is the new mayor of Carey. Wyandot County Common Pleas Court Judge Kate Aubry swore in Rathburn on Friday. She is the village’s first female mayor and fourth in the last year. The first issue she will face is prayer at council meetings.

No gas was detected at schools on Upper Sandusky’s north side Thursday after a work crew ruptured a gas line near the corner of North Seventh and Finley streets. Emergency calls to police from residents and officials at St. Peter and South schools reporting smells of gas began coming in to police about 8:30 a.m.
