Freshman leads LCC past Wynford, 28-16

Coming in hot

LIMA — Only a freshman, Shaun Thomas had speed for which Wynford had no answer Saturday night. The 5-9, 170-pound Lima Central Catholic running back ran for 232 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Thunderbirds to a 28-16 non-conference victory against the Royals on a rainy, windy Saturday night game at Spartan Stadium.

Upper Sandusky holds on for 20-14 win

Pass defense

BUCYRUS — Despite being plagued by penalties, Upper Sandusky’s sideline still was able to jump for joy thanks in part to a large defensive stop late to help secure a 20-14 win against Northern 10 rival Bucyrus. Rams linebacker Nate McMillan broke up a potential game-tying fourth-and-long pass from Redmen quarterback Ben Seibert to wide receiver Harley Robinson in the end zone on the game’s final play, helping the Rams (2-5, 2-2 N10) secure their second win.

Falcons freshman has hole-in-one

Freshman sensation

BOWLING GREEN — Thursday’s Division III district round at Stone Ridge Golf Club was doubly sweet for Riverdale freshman Andrew Kuenzli. The first-year varsity golfer sank a rare hole-in-one on No. 8, and it helped him slide into an individual state qualification. Kuenzli shot 37 on the front nine and 41 on the back.

Upper’s Montgomery qualifies for state

State qualifier

FINDLAY — Brett Montgomery was steady Thursday during the Division II district golf tournament at Red Hawk Run Golf Course near Findlay. Montgomery had five birdies and — maybe even more impressive — no double-bogeys on a course that caused trouble for practically every other player.
