Balanced Rams run past Falcons

On Friday night, Upper Sandusky blew out New Riegel behind a 32-point performance by Abigail Fogle. On Saturday night, the Rams used balance to defeat Riverdale, 59-44, in the Falcons’ season opener.

Lexington tops Wynford, 48-39

BUCYRUS — Lexington used full-court pressure and a balanced offense to knock off Wynford, 48-39, in a non-league basketball game Saturday. Gretchen Harris led the Royals (0-2) with 18 points on 3 of 15 shooting.

NEW RIEGEL — Abigail Fogle came out firing, and her teammates were stingy on defense. The Northern 10 Athletic Conference favorite, Upper Sandusky cruised to a 74-49 non-league win at New Riegel to start its season on a good foot. Fogle made seven 3s — six in the first half.

COLUMBUS — As the Ohio State Buckeyes prepare this week for their upcoming game against Michigan on Saturday, Columbus native and Harlem Globetrotters star Zeus McClurkin joined the fun at Ohio Stadium. Zeus made trick shots from all over the Horseshoe, including a shot attempted while spinning the ball on his finger from 166 feet up.

Tong named GLIAC Attacker of the Year again

FINDLAY — Hannah Tong, a senior on the University of Findlay volleyball team, is the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Attacker of the Year. A Carey native, Tong was second in the league with 465 kills and a 4.19 kills per set average and hit at a .301 clip to earn the honor a second time.

Carey leads All-DC-U cross country team

Carey’s Dean Kessler and Trevor Cook were repeat top honorees as coach and boys runner of the year, respectively, while Upper Sandusky’s Madelyn Shasteen earned girls runner of the year honors on the All-Daily Chief-Union cross country team.

District champions

The Upper Sandusky Middle School and Little Rams took first place and the Mini Rams were third last weekend at Oak Harbor. The group overall won the honor of district champion with the highest average of any district there, including some that also had high school teams competing.

Wynford puts 3, Carey 1 on all-district 1st team

Wynford’s Zach Hoffman, Caleb Stone and Cole Heinlen and Carey’s Jonathon Racheter were All-Northwest District first-team selections as picked by the media and released Thursday evening. Hoffman was selected as a quarterback, Stone as an offensive lineman, Heinlen as a defensive back and Racheter as a linebacker, all in Division VI.
