Carey’s Lykins advances to state finals in 400 dash

Racing to the finish

COLUMBUS — Carey junior Addystin Lykins’ goal has been to stand on the podium, make those in her school and town proud and make the finals of the state track and field meet. And thanks to posting the fifth-best qualifying time in the preliminaries of the 400 dash in 58.51 on Friday, she will have an excellent chance to do then when she competes in the finals at 10:35 a.m. today at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Mullholand places 10th in state high jump

Up and over

COLUMBUS — Finishing third at the state track and field meet as a freshman set high expectations for the future for Mohawk’s Taeylor Mullholand. Having a personal best height of 5-6 this year set the bar even higher. Mullholand entered the state meet this year hoping to improve upon her third-place finish last season. Although she cleared 4-10, 5-0 and 5-2, Mullholand wasn’t able to clear 5-3 on any of her three attempts and finished in 10th place Friday evening at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

DQ leaves Wynford disappointed

Full speed ahead

COLUMBUS — It wasn’t the ending of his high school track career that Wynford senior Alizhah Watson envisioned. It also wasn’t the result that Watson and members of the Wynford boys 400 relay team hoped for at the state track meet Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Carey boys miss relay finals

Passing the baton

COLUMBUS — The Carey boys 1600 relay team had hoped their time at the preliminaries of the state track meet would be lower than their time at regionals. No such luck. A team with two first-year runners, the Blue Devils had the 11th-best preliminary time of 3:28.63, 1.5 seconds slower than their regional time. Seniors Andrew Bell, Austin Hertel and Griffin Summit and freshman Bryce Conti finished about a half-second back of the final qualifying time of 3:28.11.
