BUCYRUS — Turning the ball over five times — including a fumble on the Royals’ first play from scrimmage that led to an Upper Sandusky touchdown — didn’t phase the Wynford football team. Instead, the Royals relied on their quick-strike offense in their 65-14 victory over Upper Sandusky on Friday at Wynford High School.

SUNBURY — Brett Montgomery is where he wants to be after one round of the Division II state golf tournament Friday at NorthStar Golf Club. The Upper Sandusky senior is tied for fourth place and just two strokes back of the lead after shooting a 2-over-par opening round of 74. Even so, he said he feels like he could have done much better.

COLUMBUS — Riverdale’s Andrew Kuenzli shot a first-round 85 and is tied for 32nd place after one round in the Division III state golf tournament Friday at the Ohio State University Scarlet Course. Starting on the back nine, Kuenzli shot a 44 on his first nine holes and finished with a 41 on the front side.

FINDLAY — Riverdale hung tough with Liberty-Benton in the first half, but the Eagles exploded in the third quarter and ran away with a 49-0 victory Friday night at Liberty-Benton. The Eagles (6-1, 5-0 Blanchard Valley Conference) led just 7-0 at halftime on a Mason Rose second-quarter 8-yard touchdown run, but Rose and his teammates went off in the third quarter.

VAN BUREN — At the last minute — literally — the ball finally bounced Riverdale’s way. Logan Frey’s shot deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and down into the goal with just 49 seconds remaining to give the Falcons a 1-0 victory and the boys North Central Ohio Soccer Association championship Thursday at Van Buren.

Coming off of a 19-kill performance, Wynford senior outside hitter Lainey Holman didn’t wait long to finish with a double digit number of kills again. Holman finished with 14 kills in addition to 15 digs in the Wynford volleyball team’s 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 victory over Upper Sandusky on Thursday at Upper Sandusky High School.

CAREY — Carey closed out Northern 10 Athletic Conference play with a dominant 25-6, 25-8, 25-13 victory against Bucyrus on Thursday night. McKenzie Row pounded 13 kills and also was 22 of 22 serving and tallied eight digs to lead the Blue Devils (10-11, 9-7 N10).

MORRAL — Paityn Clouse and Catherine Klopp combined for 21 kills as Mohawk swept Ridgedale 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 in Northern 10 Athletic Conference volleyball play to end the regular season Thursday night at Mohawk. Clouse had 12 kills and a team-leading 12 digs, while Klopp had nine kills and a pair of blocks.

Cory-Rawson scored twice in the first 10 minutes, and that was enough to beat Upper Sandusky 2-0 in a girls North Central Ohio Soccer Association match Thursday at Upper Sandusky. Paige McVetta scored only 3:22 into the match, and less than six minutes later, Grace Roebke made it 2-0 in favor of the Hornets (9-6-1, 2-3 NCOSA).

RAWSON — Jaidyn Thiel and Payton Randall connected for goals four times as Upper Sandusky quickly erased an early two-goal deficit to defeat Cory-Rawson 4-2 on Thursday at Cory-Rawson. Matt White scored only 2:46 into the match, and Hunter Bixler converted a penalty kick three minutes later to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
