Van Buren uses early lead to top Carey

CAREY — Van Buren jumped ahead of Carey early on its way to a 75-64 victory in a non-league boys basketball victory on Saturday, but by and large, the Blue Devils showed much better than they had the previous night. After shooting 18-of-47 from the field Friday in a 20-point loss to Blanchard Valley Conference middler Riverdale, Carey (0-2) improved to 23 of 51 against a likely BVC title contender Saturday.

Otsego wins Northwood Derr Invitational

NORTHWOOD — Otsego edged Sylvania Northview, 247.5-243, for the championship this weekend at the Jim Derr Invitational at Northwood. Riverdale competed but did not place in the top five, nor did any of its wrestlers compete for championships.

Rams roll without All-Ohioan

WILLARD — Upper Sandusky opened its season without All-Ohio senior forward Wes Vent, who is inactive indefinitely due to violation of team rules. In Game 1, Upper Sandusky was fine.

Riverdale dominates inside in 64-44 victory against Carey

CAREY — Riverdale had a distinct advantage inside, exploiting Carey’s lack of size in a season-opening 64-44 road victory to open the season Friday night. Noah Hough, at 6-foot-6, finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, Isaiah Hicks had 16 points and seven rebounds before leaving with an injury late in the third quarter.

New Riegel pulls away from Mohawk in 4th

SYCAMORE — New Riegel pulled away in the fourth quarter to take a 51-38 victory against Mohawk to open the boys basketball season Friday night. The Blue Jackets (1-0) led 13-9 after one quarter, 27-21 at halftime and 34-30 after three quarters before getting a final cushion with a 17-8 fourth-quarter advantage.

Upper 8th grade boys defeat BC

NEW WASHINGTON — The Upper Sandusky eighth grade boys basketball team defeated Upper Sandusky, 27-19, on Thursday. Owesley Ogden and Austin McLane had seven points each, and Cade Adams scored six points.
