MOUNT BLANCHARD — Riverdale was able to slow down Liberty-Benton leading scorer Jensen Hiegel, but it had no answer inside for Caitlin Elseser. The 6-foot-2 freshman had 20 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks as the Eagles pulled away for a 75-53 victory Thursday night in Blanchard Valley Conference girls basketball play.

GALION — Galion matched Upper Sandusky’s energy early, but ultimately it could not keep up for a full game. Or even for one half.

FINDLAY — Carey High School graduate and current University of Findlay senior Hannah Tong was named an NCAA Division II volleyball first-team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Wednesday.

BUCYRUS — Upper Sandusky’s seventh-grade girls basketball team used defense and a balanced offense to defeat Bucyrus, 25-13, on Thursday. Grace Vent and Nadia Morrison had six points each to lead the Rams (3-1).

SYCAMORE — A Wyandot County Special Olympics fundraiser brunch will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sycamore Community Center. Food will be provided for a donation that goes toward a trip to the Special Olympics Unified Bowling Tournament in Las Vegas from Feb. 14-16.

TIFFIN — Angeline topped Tiffin Developmental Center, 48-42, to open their basketball season Wednesday. The Indians (1-0) led 10-9 after one quarter, but fell behind, 17-12, at halftime.

After having success last year in its first venture in the Special Olympics Unified Bowling Tournament, Wyandot County has a chance to go back again this year, and this time with two more pairs. Special Olympics athlete Mike Vogel teamed with his unified partner, his father John, to win a national championship last year in Reno, Nevada, becoming Wyandot County’s first national champions.

MARION — Upper Sandusky’s boys and girls swim teams captured first place Wednesday in the River Valley Invitational at the Marion YMCA’s W. Keith Davis Natatorium.

BELLVUE — Upper Sandusky came up with plays when it had to, and the Rams held off a Bellevue rally effort, 56-50, for a big non-league road victory Tuesday night. The Rams (4-0) led by as many as 14 points early in the fourth quarter before the Redmen (2-1) surged down the stretch, pulling to within 46-43 with 1:31 remaining.

BUCYRUS — Wynford’s Northern 10 Athletic Conference opener against Bucyrus went about as well as possible for one half. The Royals led 27-2 at halftime before the game’s leading scorer Sarah Ogden went down under the Redmen basket in the first minute of the third quarter.
