Upper Sandusky Middle School will host the 20th annual East of Chicago wrestling tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday. Arcadia, Fostoria, Kenton, Mohawk, Riverdale, Shelby, Van Buren and Upper Sandusky will compete.

If the first week is any indication, another long winning streak may be on the horizon for the Upper Sandusky girls basketball team. Four — nearly five — players scored in double figures as the Rams pummeled Willard 72-50 on Tuesday at Upper Sandusky High School.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Riverdale’s girls basketball team got off to a slow start, missing its first five shots from the field against Hardin Northern on Tuesday night. Once the Falcons got going, though, there was little the Polar Bears could do to stop them.

NORTH ROBINSON — Upper Sandusky’s boys swimming team opened the season Monday with a 57-37 victory at Colonel Crawford, while the Rams girls were defeated, 64-30.

Six local football players from Mohawk, Wynford and Carey High Schools were named to the All-Ohio football teams. Mohawk defensive back Parker Brown was named first-team All-Ohio, defensive lineman Nick Theis was named second-team All-Ohio and wide receiver Zach Hayman garnered All-Ohio honorable mention honors.

The Upper Sandusky eighth grade boys basketball team defeated Ridgedale, 48-31, on Monday. Trenton Beamer led the Rams with 11 points, while Zach Shaeffer and Owen Knapp scored 10 points each.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Shots weren’t falling through the first three quarters, but Upper Sandusky warmed up just in time. Led by Megan Hensel, the Rams erased an eight-point deficit with six and a half minutes to go and downed Riverdale, 66-54, on Saturday night.

BUCYRUS — A day after a 49-point loss, Wynford girls basketball coach Amy Taylor-Sheldon wasn’t sure what to expect heading into Saturday’s contest against Ashland Crestview. After all, the young Royals were facing a Crestview team coming off of a 70-point victory over Hillsdale on Friday.

When Upper Sandusky senior forward Megan Hensel stole the ball and hit an uncontested layup in transition early in the second quarter, it was a sign of things to come. The Upper Sandusky Rams forced 19 turnovers — many of which led to layups in transition — during Friday’s 67-56 season-opening victory over the New Riegel Blue Jackets at Upper Sandusky High School.

CALEDONIA — Wynford’s roster features only one senior and one junior, while River Valley has six seniors and an All-Ohio sophomore. Friday night’s opener between the Royals and Vikings went about as you would expect with River Valley taking a decisive 73-24 victory.
