ATTICA — Mohawk’s girls were fourth in the high school White division at the Seneca East Tiger Classic cross country meet Saturday. Liberty Center topped Hopewell-Loudon, 65-80 for first place, and Fairfield beat out the Warriors for third, 132, 138. Norwalk St. Paul was fifth with 149 points.

SHELBY — Shelby rallied to win a five-set volleyball thriller, 25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 25-10, 16-14, in a non-conference match against Wynford on Saturday. CC Gurney led the Whippets (2-1) with 15 kills, followed by Emma Lyberger with 13, Megan Crain with 10 and Faith Bailey with nine.

SYCAMORE — Stingy defense and efficient offense was the recipe for success for Mohawk in a season-opening non-conference win against Margaretta at home at Warrior Field on Friday night.

The Upper Sandusky football team started strong in its 2017 season debut against River Valley, but it could not keep pace with River Valley’s bruising offense, giving up five unanswered touchdowns to lose 34-8 on Friday. The Rams struck first on a 26-yard dash from sophomore quarterback Mason Vent which featured multiple cuts up the left hashline.

VAN BUREN — It would not be crazy to think Carey would look to throw more this year with a third-year starting quarterback in Brayden Wentling, and in the Blue Devils’ season opener Friday night, they did their fair share of it.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — A second-half shutout and pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns sealed a 40-18 Riverdale football victory over Waynesfield-Goshen to begin the 2017 campaign Friday. Aidan Loveridge helped out in a few ways as well, including returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown.

FINDLAY — Wynford isn’t the bully it used to be. The Royals worked some early momentum in their season opener at Liberty-Benton, but a turnover and a pick-six on their first two drives — both in Eagles territory — turned everything the home team’s way.

Jadyn Thiel scored a pair of goals and Anson Hill made 20 saves to help Upper Sandusky earn a 2-2 draw against Clear Fork on Thursday in a non-conference boys soccer match.

CAREY — As usual, Sydney Kin led Carey in kills on Thursday night, putting down 15 of them in the Blue Devils’ 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 victory against Upper Sandusky. But with Carey struggling a little bit early, it was another senior who got it going. Hannah Zimmerman had five of her nine kills during an 11-0 run that set the tone for the rest of the match.

KENTON — Andrew Kuenzli shot a 40 to lead Riverdale to a 212-235 victory against Ridgemont in a non-conference boys golf match Thursday at Kenton Veterans Memorial Golf Course.
