Carey elementary students follow superintendent Mike Wank into the new school for the first day of classes after getting off their bus after the first-period bell this morning. Many students arrived late on day one in the new building as traffic was backed up on South Vance Street and Glenn Avenue.

Upper Sandusky and Carey youth kicked off the 2016-17 academic year for public school districts serving Wyandot County students today. Sheriff Mike Hetzel is asking parents to also study school rules as their children start a new year.

A caller reported a vehicle left at Pilot Travel Center early the morning of Aug. 7. The caller also reported the driver was acting strange.

TIFFIN — Tiffin Fire Chief Kevin Veletean announced the department has received a $1 million grant to purchase a new ladder truck at Tiffin City Council on Monday night. The Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters grant is a 90-10 split with the city of Tiffin, covering $1 million of the $1.102 million project.

The Wyandot County Regional Planning Commission meeting scheduled for Thursday has been canceled. There are no pre-application guidance or variance issues to present to the board.

COLUMBUS — The 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program has announced that Diversified Agri-Services Inc. in McCutchenville has been added to its growing list of nutrient service providers to achieve certified status.

REYNOLDSBURG — The Ohio Department of Agriculture will sponsor a collection for farmers wanting to dispose of unwanted pesticides from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Hardin County Fairgrounds, 14134 CR 140, Kenton. The pesticide collection and disposal service is free of charge, but only farm chemicals will be accepted.

MANSFIELD — The Ohio State University Extension will present “Forest Health: Invasive Insects” from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the OSU Mansfield campus. The event is part of the Ohio Woodland Stewards Program and costs $35 per person.

A proposed water system improvement in the city of Upper Sandusky is stalled for the next two weeks after a resolution authorizing the mayor to seek Ohio Public Works Commission funding was tabled during Monday’s regular meeting.
