Area youth selected to perform with honors band at Rose Parade

SYCAMORE — A local high school student has been selected as a member of the Bands of America Honor Band and will march in the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, after the first of the year. Blake Depinet, 15, who will be a sophomore at New Riegel High School next year, and his classmates were encouraged by their band teacher to apply for the All-American band through Music for All, a nonprofit organization that promotes life-changing experiences through music.

Police: Man, woman die of suspected heroin ODs separately

An Upper Sandusky man and a former Carey resident both have died in the past week of suspected heroin overdoses, according to police reports released after their deaths. Kendra M. Manns, 43, was found unconscious on Saturday morning in an apartment in the 500 block of East Broadway Street, Toledo, according to a report from Toledo police.

Mohawk school board to meet

SYCAMORE — The Mohawk Local Schools Board of Education will meet in special session at 7 p.m. today for the purpose of establishing goals for the 2016-17 school year. The meeting will be a work session at the Mohawk Community Center and no action will be taken.

Volunteers sought for project at Daughmer State Nature Preserve

BUCYRUS — The Ohio Natural Areas and Preserves Association is seeking volunteers for an invasive species control project from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 18 at Daughmer Savannah State Nature Preserve, Bucyrus. The ONAPA calls Daughmer Prairie Savannah, a state nature preserve managed by the Crawford Park District, “one of the finest prairie savannas in the country.”

City council receives updated yard maintenance ordinance to consider

Changes have been made to a draft yard maintenance ordinance to be proposed in the city of Upper Sandusky, and council is expected to hold the first reading of the ordinance at its next meeting. Law director Mark Ellis distributed the updated copies of an ordinance to create a chapter in the city’s codified ordinances establishing rules for the maintenance of personal property in or on the exterior areas of residential properties.
