VAN BUREN — Carey’s Jordan Hertel, Mohawk’s Kaden Bish and Riverdale’s Grady Phelps all won championships Saturday in the Van Buren Invitational wrestling tournament.

Mohawk’s Owen Patrizi and Upper Sandusky’s Ethan Lewis were runners-up, and numerous other area wrestlers placed in the 31-team tournament.

Hertel went 5-0 to work his way through the 150-pound bracket with only one pin, in the opening round. He won twice by major decision, won 7-2 in the semifinals and then took a 14-3 major decision victory against Tinora’s Dillion Welling.

Bish went 4-0 at 175 pounds, winning by technical fall, major decision and then technical fall again to reach the final. He rolled again with a 19-9 major decision victory against Swanton’s Michael Holtsberry.

Phelps was dominant in reaching the finals at 132, winning three times by pin and then winning a 10-1 major decision against Patrizi, who was 3-1 with one pin and two victories by decision.

Lewis reached the 165-pound finals with a technical fall victory, a 9-6 win by decision and then a come-from-behind 8-6 win. He lost a 19-9 major decision to Allen East’s Jacob Pinks.

The Rams’ Braylon Shepherd and Abe Baldwin both finished third in their weight classes. The Warriors’ Brant Kirian and Braylan Mullholand were fourth. The Blue Devils’ Reid Blankemeyer finished fifth, while Mason Rickle was sixth.

Shepherd was 3-1 at 106 pounds, with his loss in the semifinals coming in sudden victory. He went on to take third place with a 9-6 victory against Cory-Rawson’s Hayden Walters.

Baldwin was 4-1 at 120 pounds, losing a 15-0 technical fall to Woodmore’s Wyatt Thieroff in the semifinals. He beat Bluffton’s Branden Cross with an 18-3 technical fall for third place.

Kirian was 4-2 overall in the tournament at 138, losing a 4-3 decision to Otsego’s Owen Kasza in the third-place match. Mullholand was 3-2 at 215, getting pinned by Swanton’s Cam’ron Kirtz in the third-place match.

Reid Blankemeyer was 3-2 overall, with a 7-2 victory against Eastwood’s Conner Norton in the fifth-place match. Rickle reached the semifinals at 165 but was injured in a 7-4 loss to Pinks and defaulted to sixth place.

Carey’s Emery Littleton (113 pounds), Kayden Burgei (144), Brady Atkins (157) and Nathan Gery (215) all were eliminated in the consolation quarterfinals, coming up a win shy of placing. Mohawk’s Braxton Frisch (150) lost a 1-0 decision in the consolation quarterfinals.

Woodmore was the tournament champion with 167 points, edging out Tinora, with 162.5 points, and Swanton, with 160.5 points. Mohawk was 10th with 102 points, Carey was 11th with 95 points, Upper Sandusky was 15th with 60.5 points and Riverdale was 21st with 41 points.

Riverdale next competes in a dual against Hopewell-Loudon at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Bascom. Carey and Mohawk compete in the Division III Duals at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Sandusky St. Mary. Upper Sandusky wrestles in the Sally George Invitational at 4 p.m. Friday at Pleasant.

Comeback
