TIFFIN — A first-year cross country runner as a senior, Destini Oler did not know what to expect during Saturday’s regional race at Hedges-Boyer Park. She did not exactly stick to the plan, but it worked out anyway.

ATTICA — Carey made tackles and played good defense in the first half, but from the opening kickoff of the second half, that changed. D.J. Ruffing returned that kick 82 yards for a touchdown, and the Tigers eventually ran away with a 42-13 victory against Carey to guarantee them a playoff game and leave the Blue Devils wondering if they would make the postseason. Ultimately, they did anyway.

NEW WASHINGTON — On a cold and rainy Friday night, the Wynford football team received a much tougher game than expected from winless Buckeye Central in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference showdown. Unsurprisingly, the N10 champion and playoff-bound Royals pulled away with a 29-8 victory, but it was not as easy as they would have liked.

Colonel Crawford got most of its work out of the way before things got too sloppy. Behind a couple of early big plays, the Eagles soared out to a 26-0 lead and held on to top Upper Sandusky, 34-14, on a cold and wet Friday night. The rain began to pour right as teams took the field for the opening kickoff. Neither team scored in the second half.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Mistakes, in the form of fumbles, were too much for Riverdale to overcome. As steady rain fell from the sky on a cold and blustery night, the Falcons fumbled the ball six times — three of them resulting in turnovers — as they lost 12-6 in heartbreaking fashion to Blanchard Valley Conference foe Hopewell-Loudon on Friday, concluding the regular season for both teams.

EDON — After a two-hour bus ride to the far northwest corner of the state, Mohawk started slow but had a huge second quarter in a 44-14 victory against Edon to clinch the team’s first playoff berth since 2010. The Warriors (8-2) scored 30 points in the second quarter and added to their advantage with two more touchdowns in the third quarter.

FINDLAY — Eric Vackert was hoping he would not be compared to former NFL coach Marv Levy after Thursday night’s district volleyball match. Thanks to Carey’s turnaround midway through the second set of its Division IV district final Thursday night, that won’t happen.

FINDLAY — If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Riverdale’s Reygan Frey took that to heart in Wednesday’s Division III district semifinal soccer match when, after being stopped the first time on a one-on-one with the Van Buren keeper, took advantage of the same scenario the second time. A move around the diving keeper allowed her to place the ball in the net to help give the Falcons a 1-0 victory.

Carey’s Sydney Kin and Mohawk’s Alexa Konkle were named first-team All-Northern 10 Athletic Conference volleyball selections. Kin, a senior middle hitter, is the league’s leading hitter, averaging 4.8 kills per set with a .365 hitting efficiency, and leading blocker at 1.12 per set.

The Cardinals won the Midget League Football championship, finishing 7-0 on the year with a 26-6 victory against the Packers Saturday in the Pumpkin Bowl.
