The Upper Sandusky Middle School competition cheer squad recently took first place in Vermillion and won high points for the day, earning grand champion of the event.

Seneca East scored 23 points in the first quarter and defeated Upper Sandusky, 51-20, in an eighth grade girls basketball game Monday. Jenna Kurtz led the Rams with 8 points, while Harley Brown scored 5 points. Ruth Baldwin had 3 points, and Brooke Swavel and Madison Byrum scored 2 points each.

TIFFIN — Mason Vent’s 25-point performance Saturday night probably looked familiar to Upper Sandusky fans. Like his older brother Wes did so many times before graduating this past spring, Mason scored inside and out as the Rams routed Tiffin Columbian, 67-35.

SYCAMORE — With an extra week to prepare for its first game, the Mohawk girls basketball team looked ready. The Warriors opened their season Saturday by forcing 40 turnovers in a 43-22 victory against Cory-Rawson.

BUCYRUS — Leading by seven points heading into the fourth quarter of Saturday’s contest against Wynford, the Riverdale girls basketball team knew exactly which adjustment they needed to make to put the game out of reach.

CAREY — Destiny DeFeo drove to the hoop for a bucket with 12.8 seconds left to give Carey a come-from-behind 39-38 victory against Arcadia on Saturday afternoon.

VAN BUREN — Cody Luzader dished to Trey Bame for the game-winning layup with 2.4 seconds left as Carey’s boys basketball team defeated Van Buren, 53-52, on Saturday evening.

MANSFIELD — Upper Sandusky’s swimming boys were second and the girls were third Saturday in the Friendly House Invitational hosted by Lexington. The Rams boys scored 330 points, finishing behind only Lexington with 440 points. Lexington also took the girls title with 498.5 points, while Ontario edged Upper Sandusky, 299-292.5, for second.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — After surrendering a 16-point first quarter lead by the end of the third to the Riverdale Falcons, the Upper Scioto Valley boys used their bigs underneath and fought back in the fourth quarter to take the 65-58 basketball win on Saturday. The Rams start the year 1-0, while Riverdale drops to 0-2.

FINDLAY — Led by a 5-0 day by Tanner May, Carey finished 2-3 to open its wrestling season in the Trojan Duals on Saturday at Findlay. The Blue Devils topped Wapakoneta, 39-33, and Lima Bath, 47-25, and lost to Rossford, 42-33, Olmsted Falls, 72-12, and Miami East, 45-34.
