Turnovers, 2nd-chase points lift Rams

When Upper Sandusky senior forward Megan Hensel stole the ball and hit an uncontested layup in transition early in the second quarter, it was a sign of things to come. The Upper Sandusky Rams forced 19 turnovers — many of which led to layups in transition — during Friday’s 67-56 season-opening victory over the New Riegel Blue Jackets at Upper Sandusky High School.

Young Royals overwhelm by Vikings

CALEDONIA — Wynford’s roster features only one senior and one junior, while River Valley has six seniors and an All-Ohio sophomore. Friday night’s opener between the Royals and Vikings went about as you would expect with River Valley taking a decisive 73-24 victory.

Kin, Blue Devils roll past Falcons, 85-44

CAREY — There wasn’t much doubt which team would win after a dominant first half Friday night in the opening game of Carey’s girls basketball season against Riverdale. The Blue Devils led by 38 points at halftime and would go on to defeat Riverdale 85-44 in a non-conference match-up.

Oler, Leist top All-DC-U cross country

Mohawk’s Destini Oler and Carey’s Tyler Leist earned runner of the year honors, and Upper Sandusky’s Ed Arnold was named coach of the year on the All-Daily Chief-Union cross country team. Oler, a senior, is the girls runner of the year.

Mohawk taking HOF nominations

SYCAMORE — The Mohawk Hall of Fame is taking nominations. Nominees must have distinguished themselves as students, athletes, coaches or administrators and must be at least 25 years old or out of school for at least seven years. Nominations are due Dec. 1.

Montgomery repeats as All-DCU POY

Upper Sandusky’s Brett Montgomery was named the All-Daily Chief-Union golfer of the year for the second season in a row, while Carey’s Martin Baker was tabbed All-DC-U coach of the year. Montgomery, also the Northern 10 Athletic Conference’s player of the year for the second straight season, finished league play with an adjusted (strokes added for scores on non-par 36 courses) scoring average of 37.3 strokes per 36 holes, the best average in four seasons of the N10.

New season beginning

The Wyandot County Indians basketball team faced the Sycamore Community All-Stars in an exhibition basketball game last weekend at Mohawk. The Indians begin their regular season 6 p.m. Dec. 5 against Seneca County at the Mohawk Community Center.
