MOUNT BLANCHARD — A lopsided first quarter was all the Carey boys basketball team needed Friday to earn some revenge against Riverdale 83-58 in the opening game of the 2017-18 season. Carey smartly put the ball in the hands of 6-foot-7 forward Hayden Stone early.

Even when it seemed like nothing was going the Rams’ way, their lead was substantial enough to hold on. Upper Sandusky may have set a record for number of fouls committed in a boys basketball game, but key free throws by the Rams and timely misses down the stretch by Willard helped the Rams secure their 60-49 victory over Willard on Friday at Upper Sandusky High School.

CAREY — To continue playing the sport he has loved since he was 6 years old, Carey High School senior Trey Bame on Friday signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Findlay.

NEW RIEGEL — Mohawk coach Paul Dunn said his team was just not ready. The Warriors had chances at the end, but New Riegel made just enough plays and grabbed timely rebounds to take a 59-51 non-league opening-night win over the Warriors on Friday.

CAREY — Down 13 in the fourth quarter, Old Fort made it close in the end, but Carey held on for a 47-43 victory in a non-conference girls basketball game Thursday night. Amber Nash hit a pair of free throws with 5:27 remaining to give the Blue Devils a 43-30 advantage, but the Stockaders went on a 9-0 run in just a minute’s time to make it interesting.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — As impressed as first-year Riverdale girls basketball coach Emily Reynolds was with the Falcons’ accomplishments in her first varsity victory Tuesday as a coach, there was an area she wanted the Falcons to improve.

NEW WASHINGTON — Upper Sandusky’s eighth grade girls basketball team held off Buckeye Central, 35-29, on Thursday. Madison Byrum led the Rams with 15 points, while Ruth Baldwin scored 7 points.

Carey’s Sydney Kin and Eric Vackert earned top honors on the All-Daily Chief-Union volleyball team. Kin was named player of the year, and Vackert was voted coach of the year, both unanimously.

Upper Sandusky High School is searching for a head varsity football coach for the 2018-19 school year. Available teaching positions are not known at this time.

VALPARAISO, Ind. — Valparaiso University volleyball senior Taylor Graboski recently was named a first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference volleyball selection and to the MVC all-tournament team. Graboski led the Crusaders with 325 kills and a .260 hitting percentage and finished one block shy of the team lead with 106.
