GALION — Upper Sandusky wrestling opened its season with a 65-9 victory against Marion Harding and then dropped a close 46-36 decision to host Northmor in a quad Wednesday night. Mansfield Senior also participated but did not face the Rams.

Mohawk’s Nick Theis was named player of the year, and Carey’s Jonathon Mershman was tabbed coach of the year on The All-Daily Chief-Union football team. Theis, a senior defensive tackle, was the Northern 10 Athletic Conference’s defensive player of the year and an all-district second-team pick after he finished the season with 78 tackles, including 22 for loss and 7.5 sacks.

BUCYRUS — It was not Bucyrus’ best effort, but one good quarter was enough to improve to 3-0. The Redmen outscored Wynford by 20 points in the second quarter and took a 56-42 victory on Tuesday night.

It’s not just Upper Sandusky senior guard Abigail Fogle’s 3-point shooting that makes the Upper Sandusky girls basketball team so difficult to defend, even when they’re behind. Trailing Tiffin Columbian by seven points early in the first quarter, Fogle got open in the left corner and buried her first 3-pointer of the night.

NORTH ROBINSON — Sydney Kin had 22 points and 11 rebounds as Carey rolled to a 68-18 Northern 10 Athletic Conference girls basketball victory against Colonel Crawford for the 600th win in program history. The Blue Devils now are 600-428 all-time.

SYCAMORE — Courtney Pifher scored 25 points as Buckeye Central rolled to a 62-17 victory against Mohawk in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference girls basketball game Tuesday. Lexi Evak added 15 points, while Jenna Karl had 8 points for the Bucks (3-0, 1-0 N10).

Upper Sandusky took first place Saturday in the 20th annual East of Chicago Invitational junior high wrestling tournament. The Rams beat Shelby for the championship.

The Upper Sandusky fifth grade girls basketball team went undefeated and won the championship at the Van Wert tournament.

The Upper Sandusky Middle School competition cheer squad recently took first place in Vermillion and won high points for the day, earning grand champion of the event.

Seneca East scored 23 points in the first quarter and defeated Upper Sandusky, 51-20, in an eighth grade girls basketball game Monday. Jenna Kurtz led the Rams with 8 points, while Harley Brown scored 5 points. Ruth Baldwin had 3 points, and Brooke Swavel and Madison Byrum scored 2 points each.
