BASCOM — A key defensive adjustment and a spark from the bench helped the Carey boys basketball team pull away late in a 66-46 victory against Western Reserve Friday night in a Division III sectional semifinal game at Hopewell-Loudon High School.

Drew Wennes led Huron with 19 points, but a layup in the fourth quarter stood out the most. The layup came after Upper Sandusky’s Jevon Dible hit back-to-back 3-pointers to slice an eight-point lead to two. The eighth-seeded Tigers never relinquished the lead and took out top-seeded Upper Sandusky, 61-55, in a Division III sectional final at Shelby on Friday evening.

CAREY — Just when it appeared the Tiffin Calvert boys basketball team had tied the game, a controversial call not only gave the ball back to the Warriors, but helped ensure they would advance to the next round.

NORWALK — Upper Sandusky’s Noah Clary is a win away from his third trip to the state tournament as he reached the semifinals Friday night in the Division II wrestling tournament at Norwalk.

DEFIANCE — Mohawk’s Parker Brown and Nick Theis and Carey’s Reece Mullholand and Tanner May both reached the semifinals and are one win away from state qualifying after the first day of Division III district wrestling action Friday night at Defiance.

GALION — As painful as the memories of last season’s 16-point tournament loss to the Norwalk girls basketball team were, the Upper Sandusky Rams came into Thursday’s district semifinal hoping to avenge last season’s loss to the Truckers.

FINDLAY — With its star player on the bench in foul trouble, the Carey girls basketball team dug deep Thursday night to hold off Arcadia and advance to the Division IV northwest district finals with a 55-45 victory at Liberty-Benton High School.

BUCYRUS — Wynford senior Wyatt Smith considered many colleges to continue his football and baseball careers, but one stood out from the rest. Smith narrowed it down to Heidelberg University, the University of Northwestern Ohio, Walsh University and Lake Erie College, but given the fact that Lake Erie College allowed him to play both sports, he chose the Storm.

BASCOM — On a night when their second leading scorer was held scoreless, the Carey boys basketball team still found enough offensive balance to advance to the sectional finals. Junior guard Griffin Summit scored a career-high 21 points and senior guard Trey Bame added 11 points including three 3-pointers as the Carey Blue Devils defeated Wynford 64-41 on Wednesday in the Division III sectional semifinal at Hopewell-Loudon High School.

CAREY — Near the end of the third quarter of the Division IV sectional semifinal between the New Riegel and Riverdale boys basketball teams, it appeared the result could be similar to the first meeting between the Blue Jackets and Falcons, a one-point New Riegel victory.
