Tong named GLIAC Attacker of the Year again

FINDLAY — Hannah Tong, a senior on the University of Findlay volleyball team, is the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Attacker of the Year. A Carey native, Tong was second in the league with 465 kills and a 4.19 kills per set average and hit at a .301 clip to earn the honor a second time.

Carey leads All-DC-U cross country team

Carey’s Dean Kessler and Trevor Cook were repeat top honorees as coach and boys runner of the year, respectively, while Upper Sandusky’s Madelyn Shasteen earned girls runner of the year honors on the All-Daily Chief-Union cross country team.

The Upper Sandusky Middle School and Little Rams took first place and the Mini Rams were third last weekend at Oak Harbor. The group overall won the honor of district champion with the highest average of any district there, including some that also had high school teams competing.

Wynford puts 3, Carey 1 on all-district 1st team

Wynford’s Zach Hoffman, Caleb Stone and Cole Heinlen and Carey’s Jonathon Racheter were All-Northwest District first-team selections as picked by the media and released Thursday evening. Hoffman was selected as a quarterback, Stone as an offensive lineman, Heinlen as a defensive back and Racheter as a linebacker, all in Division VI.

Kin, Hoover take top All-DC-U honors

Carey’s Sydney Kin was named the player of the year, and Mohawk’s Eric Hoover was named the coach of the year to lead the All-Daily Chief-Union volleyball team. Kin, a 6-2 junior middle hitter, led the area in kills with 424 kills and an average of 5.1 kills per set.

Hanging up his whistle

Sycamore area resident Duane Walp (right) recently was recognized for 31 years of service during the Tiffin Area Football Officials Association annual dinner. Walp, who is retiring, regularly worked lower level games at Upper Sandusky, Carey and Mohawk.

Rodriguez named 2nd-team All-Ohioan

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Riverdale junior forward Gabi Rodriguez was named a second-team All-Ohio pick by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association on Sunday. Rodriguez led the 12-5-2 Falcons with 39 points on a team-best 15 goals and nine assists.
