COLUMBUS — Cole Draper could not beat the three-time champ, but he is assured of placing for a third time. The Mohawk senior lost by technical fall, 23-7, to Mechanicsburg’s Kaleb Romero on Friday morning before recovering with an 8-3 victory over Christian Blank in the consolation bracket to get to the podium.

COLUMBUS — Tanner May felt his opponent’s weight and made his move. The Carey freshman broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown in the final 15 seconds of his Division III 182-pound championship quarterfinal against Versailles’ Jerome Bey on Friday morning at the state wrestling tournament in the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State University.

COLUMBUS — Carey’s Jonathon Racheter lost his only match Friday, but the state tournament experience was not lost on him. Racheter dropped a 3-2 decision to Patrick Henry’s Kent Petersen in the consolation quarterfinals of the 220-pound weight class in Division II.

COLUMBUS — At one point Friday morning, it looked as though Upper Sandusky’s Noah Clary could have unseated one of the top wrestlers in his weight class.

COLUMBUS — Noah Clary was about as dominant as he could have been in a match that went into the third period. Up 18-3 after a third-period takedown, Clary held on for a pin in 4:19 over Unioto’s Ben Davenport in the preliminary round of the state tournament at the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State on Thursday.

COLUMBUS — The scoring was nice and low, just how Cole Draper likes it. Draper advanced in the state wrestling tournament with a 3-1 decision victory over Rittman’s Manny Garza on Thursday at the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State University.

COLUMBUS — If there were any nerves, Tanner May sure didn’t show them. Carey’s first freshman state qualifier since 1989 made a strong first impression with an 8-2 decision victory over Austin Carroll, of Zane Trace, in the opening round of the state wrestling tournament at the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State University on Thursday.

COLUMBUS — Jonathon Racheter went into scramble mode and ended up on top. In the second period of a 3-3 match in the first consolation round, Racheter got Milton Union’s Tyler Courtright on his back and laid on top of him until the match was over.

COLUMBUS — Columbus Africentric coach Will McKinney has been disciplined for comments he made criticizing officials following Wednesday night’s Division III regional semifinal 85-46 victory against Riverdale at Lexington. McKinney will be suspended for Saturday’s regional final game against Archbold, and Africentric has been fined, OHSAA Director of Communications Tim Stried said Thursday night.

Upper Sandusky High School is selling Division II district final boys basketball tickets until 3 p.m. today and from 4:30-6 p.m. today in the athletic office. No pre-sale tickets will be available Saturday.
