John McCallister knows football and more importantly, he loves it. McCallister, 66, of Upper Sandusky, has been involved with the game since he played in high school and college, along with a couple of stints as head coach before his true passion came to fruition — evaluating talent.

McCOMB — The 12-and-younger Riverdale Black softball team edged McComb, 8-7, and finished the regular season, 9-0. FOREST — The Tree Town Festival 3-on-3 basketball tournament is slated for July 11 at the Forest Park. Registration is 8-8:30 a.m. with no late entries.

The Upper Sandusky High School cheerleaders recently held a Universal Cheerleaders Association cheer camp. The team learned new dances and cheers, while 10 cheerleaders received the title All-American cheerleader.

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association honored Carey cross country coach Dean Kessler with a Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award for the 2014-15 school year.

Coast to Coast Baseball is hosting a baseball tryout and hitting camp for local players ages 14-18 to evaluate a player’s hitting, fielding, arm strength and speed. Since 2001, over 3,500 athletes from 46 different states have participated in the program.

COLUMBUS — Coming into the 2015 Ohio Special Olympics in Columbus, Wyandot County coach Therese Barron was anxious to see how her team would fair in the new sports — soccer and swimming.

NEW ORLEANS — Carrol Pauley, who will be a junior at Riverdale High School this fall, played on Blackswamp’s 16 National team that competed and finished 26th of 48 teams this past weekend in the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships in New Orleans.

COLUMBUS — The soggy environment and unfortunate weather did not dampen the opening ceremony and events of the 2015 Ohio Special Olympic Summer Games on Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
