BUCYRUS — By putting academics first, Wynford senior Seth Hoffman was able to zero in on a college choice to continue his track and field career. Hoffman signed Thursday to throw as part of the Miami University track and field team.

PIQUA — Shane Pack wasn’t at his best, but he was good enough to advance. A state placer in the discus last year, Pack will be back in Columbus for the same event next week after tossing a throw of 147-3 in the Division II regional track and field competition at Piqua on Thursday.

CAREY — When the Blue Devils face The Golden Bears at the Marathon Diamonds this year, it’ll be for a trip to state. A bit of a surprise to reach the regional tournament last year, Carey downed perennial power Gibsonburg, 8-6, in the semifinal before losing to eventual state champion Convoy Crestview in the final.

Mohawk’s Austin Harper repeated as Northern 10 Athletic Conference player of the year on the All-N10 baseball team released Thursday. The senior shortstop and pitcher was second in the N10 with a .463 average, ranked one off the league lead in home runs with three and finished with N10-bests of 33 RBIs and 33 runs scored. His 14 doubles, .586 on-base percentage and .768 slugging percentage also were best in the N10. As a pitcher, Harper was 2-2 with two saves, a 1.79 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 27 1-3 innings.

Bookie’s Lawn Service won its third straight game with a 16-14 victory against the Tiffin Twisters in a SenSanWyan C League girls fastpitch softball game Wednesday.

FINDLAY — A young Carey team has played with confidence through its postseason run. Lone senior Dani Berardinelli-Clark has more to do with that than the numbers she puts up on the field.

TIFFIN — The start to the Division III regional track and field meet Wednesday at Frost-Kalnow Stadium could not have been much better for Riverdale’s boys. The Falcons’ 3200 relay team of Ben Gannon, Antonio Renteria, Josh Hunter and Kyle Evans qualified for state with a third-place finish, and Taylor Bacon earned a state spot by placing fourth in the pole vault.

LANCASTER — Mohawk’s 3200 relay team has been on the cusp of punching its ticket to the state track and field meet over the past few years. It will not have to wait any longer.

TIFFIN — Carey freshman Addystin Lykins kept busy, while Riverdale senior Carrol Pauley punched a third straight ticket to the state meet to lead area girls on the first day of regional track and field competition at Tiffin’s Frost-Kalnow Stadium.
