Beat the heat this weekend at area cooling centers With heat index values rising to 100 and above over the next few days, cooling stations are opening in the area for residents who do not have air conditioning. Trinity Evangelical United Methodist Church, 108 Malabar Drive, Upper Sandusky, is open today, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The atrium will be open for all who need it and water will be available. Snacks will not be provided, but residents may bring their own. Residents also are invited to bring books and other entertainment with them. Read More

Ohio agencies put focus on work zone awareness DEFIANCE — The heart of summer is here, and with it, the height of construction season on area highways. Ohio’s highway network is maintained through consistent attention, making work zones a necessity. Safety blotter: July 18, 2019 Officers responded to a dispute over property on South Seventh Street the early morning of July 17. Two parties agreed on a time and date to exchange a house key for personal property. A caller reported a suspicious male with a group of females on Indian Mill Drive behind the Wyandot County Fairgrounds the afternoon of July 17. The responding officers located the subjects in the parking lot of Wyandot Memorial Hospital, and the subjects advised they were heading to the splash pad at Bicentennial Park and that no one was doing anything wrong. Camp Ohana brings children with diabetes together When 2016 Upper Sandusky graduate Corrie Knapp was diagnosed with diabetes at age 11, she was lucky to be able to have a support system in one of her best friends since preschool, Emma Smith. The two, now 21, attended a camp for children with Type 1 diabetes together when they were 12. Knapp explained that campers were encouraged to bring along camp buddies as support. After the camp experience, which the two didn’t like very much because of the long drive, Knapp and Smith discussed the need for a camp closer to home. Read More
Sudden oak death confirmed in Ohio REYNOLDSBURG — The Ohio Department of Agriculture, in coordination with USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, has detected sudden oak death caused by Phytophthora ramorum on rhododendron plants shipped to Walmart and Rural King stores throughout the state. Both retailers have agreed to initiate a voluntary recall of plants from their stores. Read More
