Shumaker’s goal the difference in Upper’s 2-1 tournament win

DEFIANCE — Upper Sandusky senior midfielder William Shumaker’s first goal of the season was the most significant goal scored Monday. With the Rams leading Defiance by a goal with less than 15 minutes remaining, Shumaker received the ball, raced down the right side of the field and, despite having a defender nearby, fired a shot into the right side of the net with 14:35 remaining in the contest.

The Daily Chief-Union is pleased to welcome recent Findlay resident and Marion native Hannah Schlichting to its team as its advertising sales representative. Schlichting brings a wealth of customer service experience to the position, working most recently for a financial advising firm in a variety of roles including front reception and on the organizational side of the firm. She also has worked in several customer service jobs, both in food and retail, and served for four years as a substitute teacher, which she said has taught her to work independently and to be self-sufficient.

ATTICA — There was no quit in the Carey football team Friday night in hostile territory against state-ranked Seneca East. Down by two touchdowns with just over one quarter remaining in the game, Carey scored 20 unanswered points to defeat the previously unbeaten Tigers 26-20 in overtime in one of the Northern 10 Athletic Conference’s biggest upsets of 2019.

Coming off of a 19-kill performance, Wynford senior outside hitter Lainey Holman didn’t wait long to finish with a double digit number of kills again. Holman finished with 14 kills in addition to 15 digs in the Wynford volleyball team’s 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 victory over Upper Sandusky on Thursday at Upper Sandusky High School.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Callie Sudlow scored a pair of goals as Riverdale closed out girls North Central Ohio Soccer Association play with a 3-0 home victory against Van Buren on Wednesday night. Haley Frey got the Falcons (8-6-1, 4-1 NCOSA) on the board first only 4:16 into the match with a goal assisted by Hanna Breidenbach. With just 4:21 left in the first half, Breidenbach assisted Sudlow’s first goal to make it 2-0.

The Wyandot County Commissioners recently traveled to Washington, D.C., with fellow commissioners from Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky for a Regional State Leadership Day. The commissioners heard from National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler and White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Director Jim Carroll.

Kuenzli knows the challenge ahead

COLUMBUS — Riverdale junior Andrew Kuenzli knows the challenge that awaits him. Two years after finishing in a tie for 51st place with a 38-over par score of 182 in the boys Division III at the state golf tournament, Kuenzli will compete at state for the second time in his high school career.
