CAREY — The theme for 2018’s Carey Fest is “Small Town. Big Time!” The 38th annual festival will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week and as always, will feature a wide variety of music including country, rock, jazz, folk, bluegrass and gospel.

Like other high school football teams across the state, the Upper Sandusky football team opened practice from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday behind the Upper Sandusky Athletic Complex.

The Riverdale mini cheerleading team took first place on Saturday at the Seneca County Fair.

The Carey varsity cheerleading team took first place at both the Seneca County Fair and the Vanlue Festival on Saturday.

The annual Kirby/St. Mary’s Fest took place over the weekend in Kirby.

A Pennsylvania man who is walking across America visited Upper Sandusky Wednesday as a pit stop on his journey. Jim Smith, 50, of York, Pennsylvania, walked from Bucyrus to Upper Sandusky Wednesday on the Lincoln Highway. He stopped briefly at the Wyandot Chamber of Commerce, met area residents at some downtown bars and even had a visit with a Wyandot County Sheriff’s sergeant before finishing his night at Love’s Travel Stop.

As a student at Upper Sandusky High School, Rick Young threw the shot put and discus on the USHS track and field team. He eventually broke the school record in the shot put. He truly enjoyed the sport. Years later, he became just as passionate about teaching others the mechanics of throwing the shot put and discus as well as other life lessons coaches aim to instill in student-athletes.
